I have had one but was put out my son had one a few weeks ago and just had the spray and although he was the last one to have it done he was the first to leave he did not have to wait after, He said it was not to bad.

I've had 3, OH has had a couple

and no problem

Here in Canada, they give you an injection to calm you down.

Then I was hooked up to an IV in the room where the endoscopy was to be done, they sprayed my throat with an anaesthetic spray ...... and the next news I was asleep.

I think there is something in the IV fluid that knocks you out for a short while, and also stops you remembering what has happened.

I do know, we are not allowed to drive after having it ... which means I have to arrange for a taxi to pick us up at the hospital when OH has it as I don't drive.

I was dopey for a couple of hours after I got home.

Poor you Mary, fancy having to go through it again even if it wasn't as bad as expected.

I might add, I am thinking I need another endoscopy soon, food getting stuck halfway down again, last time they were able to dilate/stretch the esophagus , during the endoscopy, which vastly improved the situation. Guess it wasn't permanent LOL= So I'll be booking another one soon.

I had one last summer, can't have the anaesthetic spray s, nor the sedation they offered. The doc was amazing, talked me through it, not too bad at all once you get the end of the tube past your gag reflex. I did fine and was able to leave much more quickly than the other patients who were still sawing logs when I left. wide awake with answers.
the anticipation was worse than the experience.

I have had something like that before, a tube up my nose and down the throat, but just as far as that, they sprayed something to numb it, that was just a minute, but I think this is different, it goes straight down your thoat and lasts longer.

I have, had it done while i was awake, piece of cake, they numb your throat , takes about a minuet, slight discomfort but not painfull, they tell you the result there & then, i'd do it again, also you can leave straight away & drive home.

I have and I had no anaesthetic, was awake and was allowed to look at my own insides! Very interesting.

Hoped you would see the funny side Marilyn, I am glad you have had some more positive reassurance and hope it will be ok, try to imagine the tube as a big string of spaghetti and slurp it down maybe, ask if you can have tomato sauce on it!

Sorry shouldn't joke, but those people who have had it already have survived the procedure and you can have the choice of total knockout maybe or sedation. I take it you have googled and read all about it.

I haven't personally, but Dad had a couple last year, and he was fine.

He was *supposed* to be sedated for the first one, but I was waiting for him when he came out of the procedure, and he was as lively as he was before he went in! He was a bit stressed about having it done prior to it, but said he didn't know what he'd been worried about when it was over.

Second time, he was quite heavily sedated (different hospital) but remembers nothing of it. Mum's had one done before too, and says she was more nervous about not knowing what was going to happen, but once it was done, she also said it wasn't anything like as bad as she'd made herself believe it would be.

So, I reckon m'love, you should try not to worry too much, get it over and done with, and you'll know what it is that's ailing you, and whatever that is, you can then get on with getting it fixed, and be well again. :o))

Kitty, I am a complete wimp too, hope I fall asleep, can just imagine choking on the tube, seems massive the size of a little finger going down my throat. Can I take my cd player lol!!! Have to go back to doctors in three weeks to see about it.

Aileen, that makes me feel a bit better, if she can do it so can I!

Most of the peeps I look after have had them.

If you are very nervous then opt for being knocked out.

One of my peeps is 95 and had one quite recently. Try to put eye drops in her eyes and she is screaming "please don't hurt me" before you even open the bottle.

She had an endoscopy and didn't bat an eyelid. I think if you stay relaxed then you will be fine.

Sorry Marilyn, all that frivolity and didn't know about this.

I just googled it and it sounds a bit difficult to cope with altho there will be numbing sprays and sedatives before hand etc. I suppose it is like a lot of things, half an hour of discomfort but might be a very useful thing to find out any problems.

There is a silver lining tho, you won't have to shave, love.
