I have the same problem as Sylvia. GR sent me this but I can't be bothered to read it yet. I don't have the problem with any other site

I am sorry to hear that you are still having trouble accessing the Genes Reunited site. This could be an issue that is caused by your browser refusing to accept the per-session cookies which the site needs to place on your computer whilst you are logged in.

Please don't be put off by the length of the following answer!

If you follow our step-by-step instructions, it's likely that the issue will be resolved ...

Cookies are managed by your local browser. Therefore whether a cookie is deleted is dependant on your local browers version and it's settings. Web page providers can indicate expiration dates of cookies some cookies can expire almost instantly some cookies are persistant. It important to recognise that cookies are only "visible" on a per domain basis.

This means a cookie from one domain cannot read data from another domain (unless the same provider owns both domains).

Also cookies represent a store of data, they are simply text files -cookies themselves are unable to read private data.

To protect your privacy other security settings are far more relevant - such as the installation of ActiveX controls.

Advertisers for example make heavy use of cookies to measure the success of advertising campaigns. However the information they are able to collate is valuable only in terms of accumulation - unless you volunteer them information their cookies can never contain private information.

Genes Reunited uses cookies for "state-management". We record whether a member is logged in or not and sometimes previous and/or next page. We do this to provide a better experience. For this data, session cookies are used meaning the cookies are deleted when the browser is closed.

To resolve this problem you need to activate the per-session cookies feature within your web browser’s internet security section. If you wish to utilize the auto-login feature so you do not need to enter your username and password every time you visit the site you will also have to enable the stored cookies.

If you were using the site previously without trouble this error could now be occurring if you have recently upgraded your web browser, or have changed your internet security level settings.

The following guide should be able to assist you to activate cookies for your internet browser;

-Internet Explorer 7.0-

The newest version of Internet Explorer 7.0 has advanced cookie management. In order to use this website you will need to adjust the Privacy Settings.

If you go to the Internet Options icon in Control Panel (found through Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel). Then select the Privacy tab, you need to adjust the scroll bar to at least Medium, then apply and OK the settings.

If you are using Internet Explorer 5.5 or earlier you should be able to change your cookie settings via the Internet Options icon in Control Panel you can find control panel under settings in your Start Menu. In Internet Options go to the Security tab, then select Custom Level. A window with a list of options and checkboxes next to the options will appear. Scroll down the list till you find Allow Cookies and change the settings.

If you are using any other browser, i.e. Netscape or AOL, please check their respective home pages for instructions on how to adjust cookie settings.

Many thanks in advance of your co-operation. I do hope this is of some help to you

It should do it for you automatically.

But best plan is to reboot - waiting about 30 seconds before you switch on again, so that your PC dumps it's cache memory and starts afresh.

It usually happens when your PC has been using memory intensive programmes, it's nothing to get bothered about.
