did anybody else receive an e-mail telling them that a person had passed away. I dont recognise the e-mail address and dont know if it is genuine. This did happen a couple of years ago with a member on here and it was genuine but as I knew the person had been ill I had no problem beleiving it. This has just come out of the blue and if it is genuine then we would have connected through one of the genealogy sites.

does the Email go on to say you might inhert some of the estate?

In which case, is a fake

consider very carefully before you reply- can you imagine that you ever gave this sender your email address? If you didn't , then it is probaly fake.

no it doesnt say anything like that I would have known straight away that it was a fake. It just says this person passed away peacefully in her recliner. I found that wording a bit strange.

If it is true, then it is very sad, if it is not true, then somebody has a sick sense of humour.

Without going into names, is it a member that uses the boards or is it someone you contact through your tree?

Very sad if it is true.

If it's a member wouldn't it come via GR unless you have given them your E-mail. Check your contacts on here.

its possible a family member is sending the emails to all the email contacts of the deceased.

Has anyone else received this email, if they have'nt then to me that makes it more suspicious. Surely if the sender realised you had been in contact with their relative then they would said the name or the group/site they belonged to.
l think l would delete it, if its genuine you'll here again via someone else.

Hope you sort it out, if its true then its very sad!

it was a genuine e-mail as I had a follow up message today with a link to a memorial website. It says on the website that she traced her family back to her 14th great grand father. Not sure where we connected but we obviously shared some common factor along the way.

I had one of those last year, about a member of this site. I recognised the addy, and it was the correct one, only the e-mail was from "a cousin".
Turned out to be a hoax (very sick imho). As the person and his wife had and still have been seen on other genealogy sites.
