Hi Mark,
It depends on when you are talking about, if parents were living together and it's before 1911 you should be able to locate them on the census. If it's later did the children take the fathers name? after about 1912 both fathers & mothers name will be on the GRO index.

Is it possible to find Names of children when the mother is not married to the father.
