Thank you everyone for your advice. I will have a read of the link that Secret Red Squirrel gave me and maybe give the DLA people a ring in the morning.

Thanks again.

I think you must be right Shirley. I get both components, carers and mobility. I didn't realise that you could get DLA on only one of the components.

When they handed out brains I thought they said trains and missed it lol

I would have thought it was more carers allowance for a child rather than disability allowance which i thought was paid to an adult who wasnt able to work because of a disability. /You could try googling for more info.

I thought DLA meant you had to have a disability which prevented you walking more than a short distance though. He can walk ok.

Would ADHD be classed as a disability?

Hi Cat

I know what you mean about being turned down for DLA as I am on it myself for my own complaints. It is so stressy having to go through all their rigamarole. I don't work because of my complaints but my husband works full time 39 hours a week.

well our young step grandson has delayed learning difficulties which includes toileting problems and very little speech and also autistic tendencies and he is entitled to Carers Allowance that his dad claims for him

You could probably try for Disability Living Allowance although you'll probably get turned down first time, that seems to be par for the course from what others who have claimed it have said. If you get DLA and you're not working you may be able to claim Carers Allowance as well. The best thing you can do is to contact the Citizens Advice Bureau who should be able to tell you what you are entitled to.

My friend surprised me tonight by saying that we can claim benefit for our 9 year old son who has just been diagnosed with ADHD. Does anyone know if this is right please? If so, which benefit is it that we are supposed to claim?

He has had 6 months of Assessed social group. has now been assessed and has had a blood test at the GP surgery with a view to starting on medication very soon.

He is also being seen by another doctor for dyspraxia and is due to be referred for Occupational Therapy.

I was surprised though when she told me that we could claim benefit as we have not been told any of this by those who have been assessing him.

Can anyone help me out here please.
