I dont see why we have to pay for this,,,,its the goverments big idea,,,they claw enough tax from us all,,
Maybe there would be more finances to cover this scheme if we didnt have to subsidise other areas,,like MP's 2nd homes and 'overseas long stay-not-going-home' visitors,

Total cost to the taxpayer could be in excess of £18 billion, or £300 per person, if this crackpot scheme goes ahead. That is in addition to the £70 or so per card they are proposing to charge for each card.

Hopefully it will get scrapped before too much money is wasted.

I don't see why we should have to pay either....what a cheek, asking us to pay when the disc or laptop containing all our details will probably be left on a train somewhere.
My point being........

Jan 2008. Laptop containing personal details of 600,000 people who expressed interest or applied for RN, Marines, RAF was left in car and stolen.

Feb 2008. A disc sent to the UK from Holland, containing DNA of dangerous criminals was misplaced, and found in a drawer 1 year later.

April 2008. An MOD laptop was stolen while an army officer ate in MacDonalds in Whitehall.

June 2008. Top Secret documents containing details of terrorist and Al Qaeda threats was left on train.

July 2008. The MOD admits that 747 laptops and 121 memory sticks containing Top Secret data have gone missing/been stolen.

Aug 2008. Memory Stick lost/stolen containing details of 84,000 prisoners in England & Wales, 43,000 of them serious/persistant offenders.

And THAT'S just the first 8 months of last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Need I say more?

Have a good day.

I wonder how mankind has managed to survive since the dawn of time without ID cards? If everyone simply refuses to have anything to do with it then there will be no ID card scheme no matter what the Government says.

If everyone refuses to pay ,i don't see what labour can do about it,especially if the public threaten to refuse to vote labour in the elections.Fred.

You don't have to pay because you don't have to have one.

I'm not opposed to them and I would carry one but not if I have to pay for it.

I've still got mine from 1946, and it's good enough for me. I do not know what the purpose of bringing this subject up to the people of this country will achieve. It certainly will not be a vote gatherer, quite the reverse I should think. A better vote gatherer would be to shut the flood gates to all and sundry, and let those in that are entitled to come eg the Gurkhas who, over many gererations have helped to safeguard this country and it's outposts.

I have a birth certificate, marriage certificate, driving license and passport. The last two even have my photograph and signature.

Why on earth do I need an I.D. card? Given time when the scheme is proved worthless, and I.D cards are forged, we will probably need a further I.D card to prove the first one was valid.

The whole concept hangs on what data is to be used to identify you in the first place.

I can envisage the half a million illegal immigrants being the first ones to get theirs !

Julia, I have mine from 1939 and it has an outing every year to the local junior school when I tell them about being a child during the war. Elaine.
