Memorable Meals

All this talk of food around made me think about memorable meals.

My favourite I think has to be years ago. My dads birthday and mine are just 2 days apart so we used to spend the day in the middle together. One year I had been at Hammersmith IVF unit in the morning so Dad arranged to meet me for lunch. We were going out that evening anyway but Dad thought I would need someone.
So I met him outside designated pub by Hanwell canal and instead of going in we walked along the canal to a bench.
There Dad set up a picnic, not just the sarnie and tinnie type thing, but the whole shebang of meats, salads, dips, crusty bread, strawberries and cream etc. along with crystal glasses and chilled wine, Tablecloth, napkins and proper knives and forks. All prepared by himself
It must have been a strange site to see, but that meant more to me than if he had just taken me out.

What is your most memorable meal ?

The one that stands out for me is when I was 13, my mam had had her 1st heart attack so while my dad went to collect her I decided I would cook her tea of Lamb chops, mashed pots, carrot & turnip and homemade gravy. I had never cooked it all by myself before but had helped on a sunday lunchtime so I had an idea of what to do.

When she came into the kitchen she was utterly gobsmacked, that I had managed to do it all. I struggled with the homemade gravy as that was always my mams fortay and she would never let anyone near the stove while making it, she stood over me and told me how to do it properly and to this day that is how I make it.

It was a meal of happiness as I knew my mam was home where she belonged.

That was lovely Uzzi. I have two memorable meals. Let me explain.
In 1954, after living on a Scottish Isle for six years - dad had taken his demob there because his fleet was stationed there after the war - he decided there was insufficient work to sustain a family of five, and we were coming back to Derbyshire. He had already come back down here to find work, so me Mam had to get us three children and herself back on her own. My sister was fourteen, so I suppose that helped., I was 71/2 and brother was about 3yrs.
We caught the last tea-time ferry to the mainland, well it was Decemeber, and travelled by train into Glasgow Our train to Nottingham did not leave until midnight, so arrangements had been made with a friend of a friend of me mother, that she would give us an evening meal, and shelter until midnight. We went to her tenament flat, and she presented us with meal No.1. It was mince with Heinz baked beans. Nothing wrong with that you might say. Wrong. The grease from the mince floated on top and mixed with the beans. Very revolting, and I cannot face the two together, to this day.
Next day saw us pulling into Nottingham station at 8.00 in the morning. Dad met us, with the son of the man he had found work with, and he had a van for all our luggage. Dad couldn't drive in those days. They drove us all to the home of the young man, and his Mam had this huge breakfast ready for us. There was eggs and bacon. To this day I treasure an egg, and will pay anything to get the best and the biggest. And of course, it has to be dippy.
Such memories.

You stalking me Catherine?

I remember once at Christmas Mum just came off night duty she asked me to do turkey or her which i did, when she went to serve it later there was the plastic bag with gibblets still inside everyone laughed and i cried. She still spoke about it to anyone who would listen years later.

That meal sounded just lovely Uzzi......

.....mine is nothing to speak of, I remember the taste, that's all........as kids Mum and Dad used to love to take us to Mevagissy, camping.......after we had pitched the tent we were starving......and Mum had made a chicken pie.........it had lumps of chicken and she had thickened up a can of chicken noodle soup somehow.......and it had made the bottom of the pastry soggy.....

........it sounds awful, but boy! did it taste special......

I like soggy sandwiches as well........and chips......lol

Derek now that would have been a meal to remember as I hate garlic.

Moonchild the taste must have been good which is why you remember it so well. My gran taught me to thicken chicken pies with chicken soup, never thought of noodle soup mmmmmmm will have to remember that.

Mothers day this year when my kids were all home and they had made me breakfast in bed, Cher made me pancakes, Luke was in charge of my cuppa and Boo made me weetabix but was a bit heavy handed on the sweetner so after a mouthful of it I thought i had rabies lol

But its something that made me smile and will always stay with me.

a few years ago i had the idea (which i thought was a good one) to celebrate my mums 80th birthday .
I rang round all her grandchildren spread far and wide from cheshire, london , cyprus, and germany .
the restaurant was booked everybody turned up.
So halfway thruough the meal i raised a toast to mum "happy 80th birthday and hope you have another 80" to which she replied but i'm only 79 no floors big enough to swallow me up
