One family in my tree lived in Coldingham and registered one of their children in Scotland and two in England, whilst living at the same address.
I bought a minimum amount of credits from Scotland's People and have managed to find what I need in their records.

Shimms, I live near Inverness, but I'm from Skye and as my husband's family were North East I have become very experienced at searching the records in this area!

Alexander, what area are you interested in? There are a lot of sites available depending on the area that your ancestors are from.
There are family history societies for virtually every region and they will do searches for you, but they do cost.
Aberdeen have an online MI search facility but you need to buy the booklets to know the wording on the stones.
Mull has an excellent site with all the BMDs and census entries. From the Outer Hebrides, Hebridean connections is brilliant and even shows photos submitted by people of their ancestors.
There's another site with census records from the 1700s for Findochty. These were done as a result of a village study.
Strathdon and Birse in Aberdeenshire have similar but these were by people researching their family history.
War Memorials - if any died in WW1 or WW2 they will be recorded on the memorial of their home town/village and also in the town/village they lived in, if different.

The Mitchell is an excellent place to search but particularly if you have ancestors from Lanarkshire. If you're there, check out the Poor Law records - you can find information on the entire family of claimants. It's particularly good at naming relatives and where they are living so if perhaps a son emigrated it will state this. It also gives the names of the claimant's parents and whether deceased or not - imagine how good that is if your ancestor originated in Ireland?!

They also hold Police Minute books there - if one of your ancestors was in the Police (in Glasgow area) you can find out all their promotions/demotions/ fines or awards. The minute book hides nothing!

I am mod on a site called scotfamtree and we have a lot of discs and books that we use as well as the usual scotlandspeople etc. A couple of our mods regularly do look-ups at the Mitchell with Poor Law records usually top of the list!

Address is http://scotfamtree.11.forumer.com

It's free to join but you are far better with the subscription (£8 per year) as you will generally save that in the first month, as we often do some look-ups on scotlandspeople as well.
All part of the service!

Hi Alexander,
I'm from Glasgow as are most of my rellies, Scotlands People is a very good site, but can work out quite expensive, but if you ask G.R memebers for help they are a very willing bunch. But finding things out by yourself is very rewarding and exciting.

Good luck with your searching

There aren't any on here, Alexander, so I hope you haven't paid for any.
I'm Scottish and know a fair bit about Scottish records.
Anything I can help you with?
