Assuming this is the Charlotte Martin living in Herst Monceaux, Sussex in the 1841 census, it is likely that George Martin is an uncle and a brother of William Martin, even though no relationships are given in the 1841 census, it's noticeable that George Martin has been placed much lower in the census list although his age is about 30.

In the 1851 census, William Martin appears to have died and his presumed wife 1816/7 Sophia appears to have remarried a John Atkins. Charlotte Martin her daughter is living with her.

Although I cannot immediately find Hester in the 1851 census, once again given her position in the 1841 census, it's probable that she is the sister of Charlotte and the daughter of William and Sophia Martin.

The only other foreseeable possibility is that Charlotte is the daugter of the 20 year old Sophia in the 1841 census.

Further to my earlier message, assuming this is the Charlotte Martin born in in Hurstmonceux, Sussex, it's interesting to note that this birth is recorded in the IGI Index and her name is given as Charlotte Wissom Martin. The mothers name is given a Sophia but no fathers name is given. According to the IGI, there was a Wissom family living in Hurstmonceux at this time. Where no father is shown but the middle name carries a surname, this often tends to be an unprovable allegation as to the fathers identity. If Charlotte was illegitimate, then Hester and Charlotte were probably cousins.

There is also a death recorded for an Esther Martin in Worthing, Sussex 1842.

thanks for your help, hester was born in 1839, i also managed to find a record of her christing and her father is listed as william mother sophia, now in 1851 charlotte is living with mother sophia and step father, no trace of hester, but i found out that william born abt 1806 died in 1879, so did sophia divorce william and then remarry and if so what happened to the other children?
