i'm in need of some help trying to sort out my family tree. according to the 1841 cenus william martin is married to sophia and has three children, he is also living with his parents john and elizabeth, in the household there is a george and mary martin whom i presume are william's siblings, but there is also a sophia born abt 1821 and a charlotte born abt 1839, so what i would like to know is who is charlotte's parents and who are sophia's parents

The 1841 census doesnt give the relationship between the household listed. have you looked on the 1851 census to see if you can establish each family group. Other than that, a later marriage cert of one of the children should name the father so you may be able to fit each family group together

have taken a look at it and it seems to point to Charlotte being Sophia b 1821 daughter, William and his family seem to be listed first then Sophia and her daughter then Mum & dad and then maybe two siblings still living at home It would seem too that Sophia may be another sibling of William. I would certainly look for them on the next census .

Yes I would say Charlotte is Sophias child this looks like her on the 1851 and Sophia is now married to John Atkins and Charlotte is decribed as Stepdaughter

Sophia married John Atkin (without the S) in 1843 that marriage cert will give you her Dads name

They are listed as ATKINS on the 1851 censu but if you get the cert in her name only then you will get the right spelling for him on the cert

thanks for your help, now i,ve found william in 1851 living as a lodger with his daughter hester, but no other children, so can some one please help me in finding what happened to to willaim and mercy who are hesters older siblings

Cant see them as yet on the 1851 but this is Hester on the 1861 census

thanks for that, now all i need to do is find her brother william, cos in 1881 i have found mercy she is now married and her father is living with her, in 1891 mecy has a grandaughter called ivy nicholls living with her now what i would like to know is who are ivy's parents
