Hi Maggie, we met in Swindon - seems a long time ago now.

I met quite a few people there that hadn't been able to get to other meetings, still in touch with lots of them though I haven't been to many meetings since.

Brings back lots of memories especially of those who are no longer with us like Alfie and Gwen.

Hi Maggie Winchester,

No, it wasn't me that you met in Swindon. Must have been another Kath.

To LindaB and BrinsleyS,

I agree that there are a new generation of other helpers who do a good job and I wasn't saying anything bad about the GR Community - just the site itself..

If you were around before 2006 then you must remember how busy and friendly the site was then. You could post a request and within minutes there was a reply but not only that there were so many posters that a thread would be off the first page within 15 minutes or so. I can come onto Genes these days and see the same threads with very few replies still on the first page after a couple of days. I just feel the site isn't the same these days.

I am still a member because I like to give back a bit of help if I can to pay back all the help I had when I first started. I'm not actively researching my own family tree any more as I found the things I was looking for when I started but I like to check my Hotmatches now and then (I have actually had quite a lot of good results from them - even though the system isn't perfect)

As I said it was GR that I was having a go at - not the members. GR take your money and don't give a lot back. There are free sites which work much harder.

I agree with Linda B.

Perhaps I have been lucky but I don't have any problems with my tree (famous last words). I still get quite a few hot matches
and make genuine contacts after almost six years as a member.

I don't use GR to search records. I have an Ancestry membership and use that, and other sites, to search for ancestors.

The only fault in my opinion is that sometimes the site runs very slowly...but then so does the internet at times (:

Jean.

Actually, Linda has a very valid point. and In the wider scheme of things the number of folks who left the site was a miniscule percentage of the total membership. Life goes on regardless, and it hasn't stopped me from making new contacts and friends on the site.

And what are GR supposed to improve now? I don't have any problems with my tree or the many others that I have been given access over the years. From what I remember over the past years each time GR make improvments there is a whole load of complaints form a handful of people who don't like or understand them.

Without upsetting any posters, this is not my intention, if you feel GR is so bad why are you still members?

I was around before 2006 and I was so very sad to see so many popular and extremely helpful members leave...but like everything else in life times change...people come and go...

There is another generation (for want of a better word) of popular and very helpful members on this site now...please give them their due.

Kindest regards

Linda x

As someone who has been a member of this site for nearly 6 years, I can't see them selling it any time soon, as it seems to me that the site is dying a slow and painful death. It's a shadow of what it used to be.

The rot set in in September 2006 when Genes in their wisdom banned some very popular and helpful members and then a whole lot more members left in support.

This site has sorely missed them and hasn't been the same since.

Personally I wouldn't give you tuppence for Genes unless they radically improve it.
