There is usually at least one voluntary organisation conveying people to/from hospital etc. In South Yorks the Red Cross have such a car service but depending on circimstances charges might apply. Local councils usually have a list of charities - worth checking out

Yes, Ann, but if you havent any buses they are no use!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 16 May 2009 19:57

we do have free bus passes in Wales

Jean (Monmouth) Report 16 May 2009 19:32

Rita, I dont understand how she did that. It is usually only service buses that you can use a bus pass on, not coaches. Yes, the bus pass is useful IF you have buses!
We have a twice weekly Grass routes bus, with volunteer drivers. You have to book the morning before and if you forget, or if you have a sudden need to go to town, they refuse you admittance to the bus.. Over Christmas and New Year there are no buses at all.

AnninGlos Report 16 May 2009 15:02

I suspect it is because it is Wales/England rather than between two English counties isn't it Jean? I have heard similar before like not being able to travel from one part of Chepstow to another with the free bus pass because one part is in England and one in Wales. There should be special provision for these things that occur on the country boundaries, after all they sent him to hospital in England!!

Jean (Monmouth) Report 16 May 2009 14:46

Rita, there is no public transport here, it would take a taxi to get to the bus station!.
I didnt make myself clear. He was given eye drops to come home with. The ones he has when he goes back to hospital are different, to enable the surgeon to inspect the back of the eye and you cannot manage bright light etc after them. take about four or five hours to clear.

the day they introduced hospital trusts was the day the rot set in - all the money for the NHS comes out of the same pot ultimately - all Trusts have done is make diffrerent areas compete with each other, have different rulings, all have their tiers of hierarchy and their own little empires. Patients are secondary to all this and on top of it all we have a bunch of dishonest thieving nose in trough MPs who are supposed to be there to look after our interests!!! You couldn't make it up could you

Dear Jean

I am very sorry to hear of the problems you have had with hospital.

The hospital should have made it clear at the outset that they no longer take patients out of the area.

I do not agree with this new rule but at least you would have known.

It is bad enough having to go for appointments.
You get psyched up and prepared.

Hospitals and council are always changing their policies,
always to suit themselves.

Do you have a good neighbour service in you area or Age Concern?
They sometimes have volunteer drivers.

If this is not possible, then I suggest you get receipts of all taxi fares, etc. Keep them.

Since the hospital has stopped an essential service which you need, I would try and get a refund.

Anyways, I hope you and your OH have a peaceful weekend.

Very best wishes.
x

The almighty Pound rules (or should that be Euro? I would be saying Dollar here in NZ). It is utterly ridiculous that where there is a need, and where materials, machinery and manpower are available, we are told, "sorry, you cant have that, there is not enough money available". Money was invented (by man) to serve us but it has become our Master (or the people who work with it have). The private banks have taken over the right of the Crown to produce money on our behalf to equal the value of goods and services available. As a result we now have Debt Money ruling. This recession will not get better in a hurry as a result. In fact it will get much worse.

Huia.

I don't drive Jean, had such a problem when my OH had a knee op many years ago, had to rely on friends.

Am pleased you alerted someone in Government about the problem ... think we need to remember we are people, not just numbers if that makes sense. xxx

Oh Jean

I am sorry, (((((((((((hug)))))))))))))

Having your OH needing to go to hospital, dependent upon hospital transport and more is enough without this.

Am glad you have managed to resolve the situation yet you could so have done without the extra stress together with having to rebook his appointment.

Take care my friend, in my thoughts

We had a problem with transport this week, my OH was booked to go by hospital car to go to Hereford Hospital eye department. Having just had a cataract done and expecting to have drops in his eyes, they recommend you dont drive yourself. Well, on Monday afternoon we had a phone call telling us that transport could not be provided because of a ruling by the Wesh Ambulance Trust that they can no longer take patients out of the principality. I had to cancel his appointment and try to get help for next week. I also contacted our local AM and asked him to check this. He has come back to me and confirmed, afterchecking, that this is correct. First he'd heard of it. We have now made arrangements, but the whole episode has really upset me.
