Thanks Kim, and yes Jude, Mum was the one who made all the sausage rolls and mincepies or cakes for family 'dos', I always asked her to make sure there was a batch in the freezer for her funeral do, but she obviously hadn't planned on going when she did as there were none there lol Not much cake in the tins either, actually, usually she had sponge cakes and/or a fruit cake for unexpected visitors and I didn't inherit her talent for pastry making and baking.
The only thing was that visitors only saw the one side to her as did my brothers a lot of the time, I was the eldest and the only girl, and bore the brunt of my mother's disappointment with some parts of her life and the guilt put on me when I wanted to travel and do things she never did. She lost her own Mum when she was only 16 so had no idea how to be a Mum to an adult, she was the baby of the family too so always had lots of support from her sisters and brothers, sadly that didn't rub off on my brothers.
Oh well, I know she did her best in her own way, she was old before her time if you know what I mean so never knew how to enjoy life, was too serious, worried about everything and nothing, and spent far too much energy on cleaning and cooking than having fun with us - I had to look after my younger brothers and read to them, teach them to read etc. I was the one kept in to do chores while my brothers were out playing - both my parents were quite old fashioned in their views that a woman didn't need further education, as she would get married and be kept - huh, got that wrong lol

take care all, we all parent in our different ways and do what we can, I know I have made my own mistakes with my son, and am sure things will continue to be that way, each doing it the way we think is right.

Hello Liz.....Losing parents and children are the hardest. Your mum sounds abit like my m.i.l. she was the one who loved gatherings and made cakes etc, kept alot of her family together that way, she died 27yrs ago now. The worst was when my mum went 28yrs ago, that was the beginning of my depression probs, bless her she was a star and we were real good friends.

But if your like me its good to remember the good times and l'm sure your son has lovely memories too:o))

Take care

Hi Liz
It was truely awful to walk away and leave her, Today is her birthday she would have been 85. my husband and I will be going up to the cemetery to put some flowers on her grave, we used to tell dad we were going and he was very happy to come along but now that his dementia is so far gone, if I tell him we are going he is happy but does'nt remember and when we get there and he realises where he is and see's the stone he gets very upset, so now we just go on our own, Dad has mums pictures all around him at home so he is comforted by them.

Thanks for the messages and the candle and thoughts, you are lovely, all of you.
Fiona, it must have been so hard to leave your Mum in that hospital, I had no time with Mum at the end but had spoken to her the night before and I went to see her in the Chapel of Rest later, with my son, then 12. He came with Mum and me to say goodbye to my Dad, and he was only 7 then, so was quite comfortable with it all.

No contact from either of my brothers tho yesterday, to acknowledge the anniversary, no way my youngest brother could forget the date as it was his birthday the day after Mum died, he would have got her card in the post I expect as she would probably have already sent it - unless he found it in her bag or on the mantlepiece to take with her to post.

Hi Liz
Thinking of you today,
10 years since my mum died, but I can remember every minute of when we were called to the hospital (New Years eve 1999.) 2am and we sat with her ,Me, Dad and my hubby. and read her stories from a book I had bought her for christmas , it was about the villiage were she had grown up they say the hearing is the last thing to go. she passed away at 4.00 am and it was freezing and cold and of course dark and it was awful leaving her there and having to go home.
(((Hug to you))))

Thanks all, the time has gone by so fast as you say Blue Moon. It was a horrible day when I got the message Mum had died, I wasn't there at the end, altho my brothers were, no mobile phone then and I was at a friend's helping her pack to move away. Mum had to be revived by ambulance men and my brothers saw that, with her dress being cut off her etc so not very nice and so undignified for Mum, they got her back and lost her again. She had been a 'creaking gate' , 79 and had two heart attacks and a slight stroke and had been waiting to hear about moving to sheltered housing when a place became available as she had been living alone downstairs in the house she and dad moved to when I was 2, since Dad had died 5 years before.
At least I knew she was ok just before the final heart attack as she had got herself ready to go to the once a week luncheon club for the elderly. The chap came to pick her up, and when he couldn't get a reply, looked through the window and saw her on the floor. She must have taken her alarm off as ready to leave, her lipstick was next to her, unless she had no chance to press the button as no call had been made for help. Unfortunately she had put the key in the door ready to unlock it and leave so neighbour couldn't get in, another younger neighbour had to break the back window and get in and open the door to the ambulance men.
Horrible feeling when you suddenly become an orphan, even if you are 47.
Life is never the same!

Oh well I expect my Mum is enjoying herself with her friends and family all her sisters and brothers and many cousins are with her and my Dad, one big teaparty if Mum has anything to do with things, she was the one for making cakes and sausage rolls for visitors, they are talked about still when family get together.
Rest in Peace, Mum and Dad

Liz, thinking of you today. x Yes l know what you say about being a older parent, my sister said she wish she had had her children when she was younger as she looks at me and said it is so good to see me have a great time with my grandchildren, l became a nan for the first time at 37 and my mum has 7 great grandchildren the oldest is 18 so she's enjoying them also.
Just heard on sky news that a women aged 66 is 8 months pregnant, sorry words fail me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Berona Report 16 May 2009 07:49

I often think of how my parents would enjoy their grandchildren, but neither of them lived to see them grow up. My husband saw his four children grow up, but didn't get to see them all marry and have families. He didn't even get to meet their partners. He lived for his kids and would have been so proud and happy with them, not to mention the grandchildren!

I get sad when I see the grandchildren with their other grandfather, but then, I suppose it's good that they have at least one of them, so I try not to dwell on it. Life has to go on. At least, they all still have me - and I have no intention of leaving them for a long time yet.

It's strange to think my son has been without his beloved Nanny longer than he was in her life. She would have been so proud of him as a young man. It's such a shame she and my Dad were older parents to me and I was an older Mum too so they were in their late 60's when my son was born and not around for long with him. He only had his Grandad for 7 years. I will be an even older grandma if he doesn't hurry up and settle down lol, he's 26 and still fancy free!
