Hi Susan
I liked it when the Success Board was on the opening page and would always spend time reading it before tackling my tree.

Made me feel warm inside at others success.

It is also very nice to thank people who have helped us and to be thanked on there by people we have helped.

Tricia xx

P.S. I am almost 95% housebound and this site has been a godsend to me.So many people cheer me up when I read their threads. I don't bother with the nasty peeps. You can soon work out who they might be!

Errrr Susan

You know if I have been a good girl and worked on my tree cos you have access to it...lol

I only have bare bones on GR and do have a couple of hot matches that are worthwhile each year. The tips board has helped me tremendously when I am stuck!

Like most people I suppose there are days when I can't face looking at my four trees and then I get re-energised and spent up to 15 hours straight on them.

I do like chat and gen though :-))

Must have been the night for thinking Susan lol :)) I was lying there pondering on the fact that with so many GR members ...there are relatively few who post on chat and gen .

I am not spending much time on my tree at the moment, until I move when I plan to get it all organised, but i do love doing look ups and get quite as much satisfaction from finding a relative for someone else as I do finding one of my own :) So whilst still on chat a lot, spend a lot of time reading and helping where poss on records etc...

I've finished my tree now (only cos I'm stuck) but tend to spend alot of time (other then on chat) on TTF board helping people to find lost "living" relatives. It is a very rewarding hobby.

I'm also currently researching a house I work at in Kent, the Duke of Wellington reportedly stayed there, so I'm wading through census info at the moment too.

I'm the same as Jean - genealogy is my main thing and what I'm online for more than half the time. Although I no longer have my tree on GR and I rarely use the site for any genealogical purposes now.

I usually pop in and out as well..................my tree is my passion and I have been helped and given help to others as I grew more confident in my ability to weed out the correct information.

I do find it odd that some members on here state quite clearly that they have given up or not even started on their tree....................but loads of people I know find me odd for being interested in dead people! lol

I read and add, to the Chat and General Boards, quite regularly but believe it or not only on a passing basis:)

My main objective is my family history and most of my time on the computer is spent trying to hunt down very elusive ancestors.

I can still remember , quite a few years ago, opening my tree to a member who was just starting out on his research and had a proven connection to me, and how thrilled I was when he not only thanked me personally for my help but also put his message on the Success Board.

I do read the Success Board but not as often as I should.

Thanks for reminding me Susan.

Hello Susan,

I think I see what you mean here. The boards are named with explanations which seem to be totally ignored by a lot of people - many of whom have never read the terms and conditions either.

For some people who are semi or fully house-bound, it can be an enjoyable outlet for them to join in a conversation on this board and there is usually some thread to suit them - whether it be serious, sad, comical, informative, etc. and it's not hard at times, to become involved in another person's story.

However, we all start into the Community boards with the idea of perhaps getting help with our 'brick walls' and most of us have received help in some way and maybe often with this. Other help can come in the form of advice about our computers, with using G.R., and indeed, in any form whatsoever.

It is sad when we see some people using the boards to 'show off' or even perhaps try to submit a posting when they are suffering from the effects of something, but this happens everywhere. They are better ignored - they are in the minority. I have found that most of the people who post here are really nice people and I feel better for meeting most of them. I have been researching for close to fifteen years - off and on -- having a break for a while, then back to it. It's nice to come back to people I have dealt with before and to help others where I can, giving them the benefit of what experience I have gained.

I do wonder how many now use this site for what it was intended- family history research.

Do you, at times, think that we all get so waylaid with personalities on the boards that we forget what we came on here for?. Well, now and then I look on the success board and read the posts by many many people who are genuinely pleased about their finds and the people who have helped them.

There are so many who don't come on the chat boards and are just interested in their family trees. it puts the boards and this site into perspective to just read a few of them and to remember what we all came together for....I am guilty of getting waylaid and must remember to check there more often to remind myself :-)

Just an idle thought in the middle of the night., not aimed at anyone but perhaps myself...no connotations intended and none expected in return.....not a thread to bring attention to any contention, but for reflection ( maybe just for me, who knows)?:-))

Susan who's main love is History and Genealogy and needs to remind herself now and then:-)))
