There was an article in one of the recent Family History/Family Tree magazines and I think a lot of them have on-line issues available so might be worth a google.

hi, thank you all for assisting me, i am really new to all this and dont know how to go about things, i do not have a lot of info on my grandfather, i dont know his first name, all i know is he was supposed to be in the police force in ripon or york around 1941 onwards, he had a daughter who was called mary she was 18 years of age in 1943, she worked as a railway clerk, she gave birth to a baby in november 1943 in an un married mothers home, which is thought to have been called victoria nursing home, i have 2 address,s where the family have lived one is north road ripon, and the other barmby avenue york, there is also thought to be some connection with panel, once again thank you all x

Hi Lisa,

Have you tried finding Marys birth, if her dad was named on the certificate you will then know his first name. You haven't said if he was married to her mother but I have checked Freebmd for Mary Rowell and found 6 between 1923 and 1926 (as you stated she was 18 in 1943) but not in the Ripon/York area.

You could also contact the Freedom of Information Office at North Yorkshire Police, I suggest your request is in writing. Give them what information you do have explaining that it is purely for family history research and see if they can help you.

I have recently obtained some of my grandads records from our local force which included his initial aqpplication form.
