When we lived on Dartmoor, I used to be de-ticked every Sunday night - by dad using a cigarette!
However, as Mr Miu's was on his face - just below his eye, I was dubious about even putting flea/tick killer on the tick itself.
Tried the old vaseline trick - that didn't work. :o(
I usually use 3 monthly frontline, (mind you he once got a tick 3 weeks before the next 'dose' of Frontline was due - he's Mr 'tick magnet' - the other two have never had one) but I couldn't get to the vet's, so have been using monthly stuff - back to the Frontline in June!

A quarterly application of Frontline keeps ticks and fleas away.

You can light a match and blow it out quick and then touch its body, it should withdraw on its own.

yep, you gotta be careful not to leave the mandibles in......I always thought that a dosing of liquid parafin would cause the blighter to let go......

One of my cats had a tick - painful and awkward place -right on his cheekbone - Mr Miu will pick up anything!
Put flea/tick stuff on them all yesterday - today tick still there.
As he was lounging in my typing chair I thought it the opportune moment, however as soon as I put the latex gloves on he flinched (can't blame him - I hate the smell too)
Not wanting him to scarper, I turned around and played a game on the computer, with gloves on.
Then I started telling him about my visit to the dentist today, (they wear nasty latex gloves too) I turned around quick with tweezers in hand and pulled the bl**dy thing out!
It was so quick & easy I thought I must have left the jaws in - but after putting it in an old yogurt pot and spraying it with pesticide, I saw the offending mouthpiece. Just poured meths over it and 'sealed' it in the pot with a latex glove! I'll probably light the fire tomorrow - using the 'meths' pot - just to make sure LOL
