Hi Vods, Here's the info in the T &Cs regarding free membership. I think the answer is, they would have to rejoin.
Steve.

I first discovered Genes Connected very early in the millenium and I created my tree on it. I received Hot Matches and contact from people, same as I do now.
In 2004, I was contacted by GR and the way I understood it then, I thought I had to pay to continue as a member and for using the site, so I did - but nothing at all changed for me until last Christmas, when I became adventurous and started clicking on other headings - including Community.
I still couldn't get any information without paying for credits - which I did, but found that I had to use them up within seven days and that doesn't suit me - I like to 'dabble' in family history, a little at a time - not be forced to stay with it in order to use up the credits within the required time-frame.
As I see it, I have been a paying customer since 2004, but the only thing I have gained by being a financial member, is that other members have helped me when I've had a query - and, of course, the chance to say my piece on the boards! A member of my family has now joined and is doing her father's tree - but she hasn't paid anything and I see no reason why she should, when I can make any enquiries for her!

Vods and I have talked about this -- if the person has received messages from a GR member, she can reply to those messages even if she is no longer a paying member of the site.
Non-paying members can reply to messages, they just can't initiate PM contact.
She shouldn't have to rejoin, I think. She's just a non-paying member when she doesn't renew her paid membership.
I was the same a Berona -- was a paying member for ages before I got bored enough one day to click on Community. ;) Thank goodness one of the first threads I saw was about how to use My Threads! Up until then, I had contacted people with shared ancestors, from tree searches or hot matches, and that was all.
