Muffy - you and I MUST be related - my grandfather and his father were wheelwrights!

I have a lot of rellos on GR. Hands up those who have Ag.Labs in their tree??? I have lots of them in my tree so I must be related to you, too!
How nice! I wondered where I got my green thumb from. Well, actually, it's closer to brown - but I like digging the dirt!

well Ag Lab - loved the Victorian Farm series and bought the book. Shipwright, sailmaker and rigger are on my dad's side, but you don't see much mention of those really. I've got shoemakers too. Most of mum's side worked on the railway, engine drivers mainly but platelayers too. I do like the sea and I've always enjoyed steam trains, so maybe its in the blood!

Berona you do make me smile, you're now on my Christmas card list with the Ag Lab side of the family.
Ggrandfather was a wheelwright, but he was also a carpenter and undertaker all at the same time so he'd got the market well sown up, made his own coffins too. Wonder where all the money went that he must have made, oh well

Im the same with the navy, ship building and pirates.

my dads maternal line were a long line of naval officers

his paternal side have more recently been 3 generations of teachers, before that shoe makers but way back pirates and Im so intrigued by the piracy!

On my mums paternal side there was ag labourers and naval personnel

and on her maternal side there was way back ag labourers and for the past 150 years till present shipwrights.

so it seems my love of the sea has been bred into me from both sides of the family.

Paper making here.

Two generations of my Hampshire lot worked for Portals mill making banknote paper. It's something I've now become very interested in and I've found out the history of Papermaking and the growth of the industry in England.

At the moment, I've found a book (online) called Wiltshire Tales, which was published in about 1853, and are written in Wiltshire dialect of the time. Many of the tales are of farm labourers, and that fascinates me, as one branch were farm labourers at that time.

Huge naval history on my Mum's maternal line and this is a recent discovery. An ancestor was on the E11 submarine and had an illustrious career in WW1 in the Dardenelles. Ag labs, shoemakers and a couple of railway people. A London harness maker on OH's side and a travelling minister on my father's side.

Beejay

Beejay Report 20 May 2009 12:21

Punch and Judy used to scare me to death. Wonder what it is about wheels and coffins going together Mind you while grandad was doing all this wheeling and burying and other carpenting (or whatever the word is) they were running a pub too. Still managed to have 10 children, oh for some of their stamina

Alison Report 21 May 2009 08:58

Just had a thought, a lot of both my ancestors and my husbands came from mining backgrounds and came to Oz and did the same thing. Stands to reason I suppose since that's what they knew. Just as a matter of interest (to me anyway), one of my great something grandmothers was born in Wallsend in the Newcastle area of England. Came to Australia and lived all the rest of her life in Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle NSW.
