You don't think the person could be buried in the grounds of the house do you Ann?

Could have been a house built for a merchant, as his retirement home maybe? I dont think it refers to a headstone/funerial inscription - more a bit of the old "I'm resting my weary bones here, and no begger is gonna move me!" type of thing.

I think it means "here is my final resting place".

Out walking this morning Daff and passed this wonderful old house we had not seen before, behind huge wrought iron gates, in large gardens with a proper cut lawn (unusual here) and two what looked like, large summer houses, very ornate. Directly opposite across the road was a wide path that led to the steps down to the promenade. The view from the house would be straight down to the sea. We thought that probably when it was built (unfortunately no date on it) the grounds might have gone right across to include the path (which incidentally was called Calle Agatha Christie!). the inscription was across the top of the front of the house.

Yes there is a cemetery in Puerto, not been in it though. I think I have passed one out this way too but can't remember where. Plenty of churches around though.

Hi Ann, Hi Jill and Helen.... I've googled and come up with the same answers as you both.... is it to do with a tombstone or funeral or something???

I am intrigued now.... have you been looking at Canarian graveyards? Do you know, I can't recall seeing any?

I didn't do Latin, OH did but can't remember it!!! I think Requias means rest (RIP is an abbeviation of Requias- - I think).

It is an inscription over an old house here. It is near the catholic church but don't think it is the priest's house. Being Spanish it is a catholic country of course. I think it could mean something like 'here is my place of rest' But would like an accurate translation.

Is requiem something to do with death or funerals?

I don't know the translation but I just found something that started with HIC EST.It said something about Catholic Priests and Mass.Does that make any sense to you Ann?
