You need to apply for disabled living allowance , if you are under 65.
This has 2 parts, mobility and attendance allowance. If you get mobility, you will thenhear from Motability, which is a charity which supplies cars for the disabled. They are not free, but your payments, which are reasonable, cover insurance and all incidentals like new tires. All you pay out of your own money is the petrol. It is like leasing a car you never own it but you get to change for a brand new car every three years. We have found it a godsend.

Claire has pretty much summed it up :-))

I receive highest rate mobility and have a car instead of the money and I also receive middle rate care.

We put £600 towards the latest car as I have to have a minimum seat height but everything else including road, tax, insurance, 2 sets of tyres over 3 years, breakdown cover and maintenance is included in your DLA allowance.

Re blue badge - you appply to the headquarters of your local county council - if you google it there should be details of phone number etc.
They will send you a form to fill in - you return it to the council along with 2 passport photos and a small fee for administration.

If they feel it necessary they will contact your GP. Takes about 2/3 weeks. P.S. I do not have any sort of allowances in order to qualify for the badge.

We find the main asset of the blue badge is that the parking spaces are larger and it is easier to get out of the car owing to the extra room.

Thats just what I need, extra room for getting in and out with my legs. I wonder if I can apply for a "blue badge"? I am only 52 does that make any difference? Also I dont drive, but OH obviously does lol

Find it a nightmare sometimes getting in and out of car when in supermarket car parks especially. We try and park next to the baby and toddler spaces and hope there is a normal space next to one. I dont like to take up any of the disabled parking as I dont have a disabled badge.

Age does not matter - apart from the extra room in parking - OH loves the fact he does not have to pay unless there is a barrier and you can even park on double yellows providing there are no loading restrictions!

Blue Badge does not cover the car - it covers the holder - have not been able to drive for past year but have held a badge for 4 years now.
