PLANTING UP AN OBOLISK

I have just bought a wrought iron obolisk (not cheap), and tomorrow I want to plant it up with two well grown Clematis. So do I plant on the outside of the obolisk, or on the inside. As an experienced gardener, even this has got me stumped
Many Thanks

Ah well - I must be wrong with mine then - cos my clematis are planted outside the obelisk feet.

This allows you to place the clematis rootball in a nice large hole properly prepared, and slope the clematis and its current supports into the framework of the obelisk so you can thread the tendrils through the ironwork.

Works for me - but what do I know? )))

Good luck anyway

Planted on the outside would make it easier to get at and train the tendrils up the supports.

Hi Julia, I agree with Jac to a word, I love clematis and every tree, wall and fence in my garden has at least three different varieties climbing up it, you do have to cosset them for a while, but the rewards are many, good luck, Nina

Hello and Good Morning to you all. Thank you for your great advice on planting the clematis. I have many of these plants, in various positions around the garden, but I have never planted them around an obolisk
The main reason for the obolisk, is to disguise a gap in my fencing, in a corner, and that of my neighbour. Having spent a lot of thought on this, I have decided that one of the clematis will be planted on the outside, because it has some large flowers and plent y of buds on, and will give instant cover, and the one at the back, will be planted inside. Today, weather wise is very good, and when OH comes back from watering the allotment, we will breakfast, and then I can get on with the 'job'
Hope you all have a good day, and equally hope the weather is good wherever you are. Once again, many thanks to you all
