Perhaps we should start a comp to see how many times a name spelling has been changed over time. My Timm has been different at least five so far

I know, eh? Actually I can't think of a Hill I've ever known. Including in my family -- because the Hill in question changed his name to Monck around 1879 and never told us! Of course, like those Tocquevilles of Janet's, I then have to deal with all the Mouck-s, Monch-s, Morek-s, Monak-s, and other weird and wonderful Ancestry concoctions.

Not that Ancestry can't screw up Hill perfectly well. You'd never have guessed how many people there were in England named Hell!

Funny, you do'nt think of Hill as being a common name, but my sisters oldest childs dad is, my oldest daughter married one, divorced him and now lives with another one, none related. their kids are going to have great fun, if they want to do a tree.

I've got Smiths in Scotland and Ireland but I managed to miss the Jones in Wales, I've got a Williams in Wales so thats no problem at all!

Three cheers for the Tocqueville's, Horsup's and Macaree's. Mind you, they just get horribly mistranscribed instead!

And spare a thought for us Hills!

Every two weeks, a fresh batch of hot matches (not) for William Hill born in the 1840s, James Hill born in the 1790s ... and not a real match among them ever ...

Got Smiths in two different lines too, so do I get two medals? ;)

My hat to averyone called Smith. I just found that my dads sister married a Smith. My family search has , until now, been relatavely easy as we have unusual names, but Aunty Renee, bless her, threw a large spenner in the works by marrying a Smith. I know that she has two daughters, and vaguely when they were born, but after trawling through only half a years births I have lost the will to live. My hat off to all dedicated Smith sleuths, one medal each being knitted as we speak. Lots of respect, love, Nina
