How soup can help you lose weight

In the battle to lose weight, hunger is the dieter's worst enemy. But research has revealed a simple aid to taming the appetite: soup. It's dieting's best kept secret says one science writer.
Imagine a typical lunchtime meal - say, chicken and vegetables with a glass of water.

If you eat the food and drink the water, you will feel full for a couple of hours before hunger kicks in. But if you blend the food with the water - to make soup - you will stay hunger-free for much longer, and less likely to snack through the afternoon.

How can blending the food into soup make such a difference? The answer lies in the stomach. Scientists have used ultrasound and MRI scans of people's stomachs to investigate what happens after eating solid-food-plus-water meals compared with the same food made into soup.

Morning Brian

I would imagine the fuller for longer feeling would be bacause when you eat soup, its normally hot / warm. This provides a feeling of contentment and fullness at the same time. Also to make the broth, one would have to add more flavour to the liquid by adding either stock cubes, or some other flavouring. otherwise I suspect the resulting soup could taste quite bland. But this may bump up the calories slightly leading to the full feeling lasting much longer.

When you eat solid food with a glass of water, the ater passes through much quicker than the food, so an hour later, the waters gone down the pan :o))

I hate soup.

I assume then that a cup of tea or coffee would have the same principal?

Only if it has milk in it, Tina.... the body treats milky drinks as a food, not as a liquid.... which is why it is good if you are dehydrated (the morning after the night before, lol) cos the hangover is best cured by protein and rehydration... milk fits both bills, lol

I love soups, and have a freezer full of home-made soup that I can't eat at the moment!!

Hello Daff

My tea def. got milk in it lol - not a lot, but some!

Only way to diet is to diet and exercise. No easy way or short cuts.

Of course if you have poorly knees its a nightmare, I sympathise Charlie Chuckles, exactly my problem, dodgy left ankle and toe joints, right knee a nightmare - needs a knee replacement in the future, so as you say, cannot do much. The spirit is willing but the old body's not.

I make a very creamy diet soup with onion, broccolli, baby marrow and a handful of fresh green beans. Add a bit of salt, pepper and a tablespoon of olive oil and blend the lot, then drink it.

I do a mean stew apparently I just dont like them.

Actually, I like my stews when I have just cooked all the meat and vegetables before putting in the stock cubes and thickener, its then that I cannot eat it. I do occasionally take out a portion before those items go in and then I do enjoy it, especially beef stew. But stew and soup tend to disagree with my stomach and gives me chronic acid reflux.

Oh dear, just talking about it is making my stomach turn! LOL
