I voice my opinions in public ( well on here to be precise, I write better than I would say it in person, because I am quite shy and would only offer my opinion to people that I already knew well) because I have an interest in a lot of subjects, and was brought up to think for myself.

I offer my opinions , not always to persuade someone to my point of view, but often just to give an alternative to someone else's viewpoint. I am often to be found playing Devils advocate.... just to give a 'balance'... I think it is only by reading all sides to a debate / argument that you can then judge for yourself what you believe to be 'true'.

edit...and if people disagree with my opinion that is their prerogative, but I do like it if they disagree in a reasoned and reasonable manner .

I like to voice my opinion generally because I believe in it, but should someone disagree and offer an alternative opinion then I shall listen and maybe change my view

Just a general question here ...

Is it just to hear themselves speak / see their name on the internet?

Is it because they think there are a lot of people in the world just holding their breath to hear what they have to say?

Is it because they want to persuade other people to think the way they do about something?


In any of those cases -- what do they expect will happen?

Do they think that people will say "Oooh, Aaah, what a lovely opinion!"?

Do they think that everyone who hears or reads what they say will say "You are absolutely right, I agree with you 100%!"?

Do they think that as soon as anyone who might have disagreed with them hears / reads what they say, they will say "You are absolutely right, you have changed my mind!"?

Do they seriously not believe that there are going to be people who disagree -- and say so??

Do they seriously not believe that when they voice opinions about subjects they know perfectly well are sensitive for some people, someone might even find their opinions *offensive*? And say so?


Do people seriously not believe that when they voice an opinion in public, they have a RESPONSIBILITY?

A responsibility not to use false facts to back up their opinion? because it is not nice to try to influence other people's opinions with false facts. Is it?

A responsibility to listen to / read what people say in response to them, and respond to it? Not whine about being disagreed with, not tell the other person they are uninformed (unless there's some reason to say that, and it can be shown), not pretend to feel all attacked and outraged that someone has disagreed with them. Not change the subject, not pretend the other person said something s/he didn't say, not drag completely irrelevant issues into the discussion. Just **respond to what is said**.


If people aren't prepared to do that -- to own what they said, to respond to disagreement honestly and sincerely and directly -- why on this green earth do they bother speaking or writing words for the public to hear or see???
