Maybe we should scrap going to the cinema , stop watching telly, talk about the weather....or laugh with our friends and family because someone somewhere in the world has been the victim of a tragedy,

Because people live their lives, because people have high days and low days, and have arguments about things which are important to them doesnt mean they are not sympathetic and sad to other peoples loss. or that they themselves havent faced their own tragedy

Carol, you have no idea of what people have faced in their lives. You dont know how many people have lost children, grandchildren, sisters or brothers, mothers or fathers. or the pain they have suffered. It also doesnt mean your / their pain is worse than anyone else's or that you / they are the only one to suffer,

life has to go on. and that included day to day life on this forum

Mildred it is Carol B who lost her only son!

We do not know if one of the members of GR was lost in that crash or was affected by it.

I am now off to work for the day ... so will not be replying to any posts

This sort of went off topic. I feel so sorry for those people waiting for news of their relatives and friends on this flight. having recently flown we tend to sit there thinking nothing will happen, I can't begin to think how these passengers felt. I did see somewhere that the plane ran into an electric storm so thoughts are that maybe the electrics were wiped out in some way. Unless they find wreckage i doubt we will ever know. And yes, it is a tragedy for those involved.

And these sort of posts are as valid as any other because it gives us the opportunity to discuss the subject and send our condolences/sympathies/thoughts/prayers to those affected in any way.

I agree there is nothing wrong with these type of threads, in fact ive posted similer myself before.

But there was just no need to compare other peoples thread material to the disaster with the plane, as if they were small children being taught a lesson on whats important in life.

Even more so there was no need to tell people they havent had tragedy in their lives, when Carol doesnt know what people have gone through on here especially if they havent made it public on the boards.

As I said, the world still turns regardless of bad things happening.

BTW Ive been following this story on sky news, just because I havent made a meal out of it on here , doesnt mean I'm not upset at whats happened.

It is very sad to read about disasters like this and my heart goes out to those in mourning for those killed.

I think there is room for all types of threads on here as long as it is within GR'S t&c's.... xxxx

Could we all have some sympathy for all the sadness in the world today, and the affected families. There is enought unhappiness without getting at each other.

Hi, reading through this thread, I'm wondering if Carol meant that some threads should be put in perspective? Then mentioned this awful tragedy, as an example?

I may have got it wrong, though. Just a thought. However, it's so sad hearing the tragedies that a lot of people have to go through. My heart goes out to them.

Well, Carol's welcome to her opinion, of course.

I might say that people who pay inordinate amounts of attention to other people's tragedies that don't affect them are the ones in need of perspective.

If we all fell into the pit of despair every time we heard of a bus crash or a plane crash or a deadly tornado, we'd be unable to function.

Some tragedies do prompt us to *think* -- if large numbers of people are committing suicide in a particular way or for a particular reason, is there something we can do to help them before they themselves fall into that pit of despair? If people are starving on another continent, or dying of preventable disease, or being abandoned to the elements after a natural disaster, is there something we can do to help them? And yup, if children are being born with defects caused by women's actions during pregnancy, is there something we can do that could prevent that?

Plane crashes? Well, I guess we could form pressure groups to demand more regulation and more safety measures. I'd have no objection.

There really isn't even anything wrong with telling your friends how sad an event like this makes you feel.

But telling other people that if it doesn't make them feel so sad, or if they aren't telling everyone how sad they feel, and if something else makes them feel sad or makes them want to help prevent other tragedies that may be preventable, they need to get some perspective?

It is very tragic when anyone is killed by accident, but is this plane crash any different from a couple of people being killed whilst driving home from work and being killed in a road accident? The shock effect on their loved ones is the same.
The fact that there were 228 people on board the plane causes it to be tragic that so many people died at one time - but there are probably that many people killed on the roads each day all around the world, if not in one country alone. I think it shows more that there are few air accidents and it comes as a surprise when one does happen.

Berona no it is no different to hear of one or 200 people dying and usually a thread is put up where people can put their views, show their sympathy etc. This thread has taken off in a nasty way because of the wording of some of the posts.

I don't think that is people paying an inordinate amount of attention to it really though. In some ways it is people expressing a fear, maybe (as I thought having flown home last weekend) there but for the grace of God....... We all get blase about air travel until we hear of a crash. People are still quite tense taking off from Madrid. after the Spanair flight that crashed on take off. It is human nature, in the same way I am not happy driving (or rather being driven) up and down the M6 because it is notorious for crashes.
Seeing that they have now found wreckage, we know they are all lost and can feel sympathy for the families.
Hobgoblin, it became a little 'closer' to home when on the local news last night we had the headmaster of Clifton school reading out a memorial for one of his eleven year old pupils who was on the flight on his way back to school. A lot of people on the flight were apparently in transit to countries other than France.
