ME

Hi all,
I am trying to trace my grandads side of the family and have reached my great great grandad William Steele born 1829 possibly in Scotland

Buried in Preston 24/05/1902
Thats all the info I have on him personally but his son Joseph Ignatius Steele I can trace furher - born early 1864 in Preston (I have ordered a birth certificate) married 22 May 1890 to Catherine Hunt.Died in Preston 09/02/1941

Can anybody help me at all?? i'm drawing a blank on Williams wife so far who may have come from Dublin, Ireland .

Thanks for any help,
Julie xx

I can see Joseph as Nephew to the Andertons in 71 and 81, so I had a look and found this..

He was listed as WIDOW

What do you think?

ME

oooh thats interesting - I thought he must be widowed.
The name Ellen fits too as Josephs daughter was called Mary Ellen.
Thank you

Julie

so am I correct in thinking Betty Anderton ( who lived with Edward and Mary) could be my great great great grandma?? she is listed as mother-in-law I think??

REPLY

Their age doesnt tally up...

Edward was listed as aged 57 whilst Betty as mother in law aged 67. I can see Betty b 1804 in 41 and 51 census with husband, Joseph. I'm not sure if enumerator made a mistake or something. But I'm not sure as they gave their age the same in each census

1841 Betty 1804
1851 Betty 1804
1861 Betty 1804

1861 Edward 1814
1871 Edward 1814

You'd need to get Edward's marriage cert and get the father, then find him with father in earlier census (that is if the marriage was taken place after 41 or 51 census).

ME

Well I have just received Josephs birth certificate and Ellen is definitely his mother biggrin.gif
Thanks for the info you have found, I will have to order the marriage certificate next.

Thanks,
Julie x

I have just traced Edwardin the 1841 and came up with the following, but it doesn't really make much sense to me

1841 census transcription details for: Eccles Or Withy Trees Factory, Blackburn, Walton Le Dale

Reg. District: Preston Sub District: Walton Le Dale
Enum. District: Ecclesiastical District:
Parish: Blackburn City/Municipal Borough:
Address: Eccles Or Withy Trees Factory, Blackburn, Walton Le Dale
County: Lancashire
Name Relation Sex Age Birth

ANDERTON, Edwd M 25 1816 Lancashire
ANDERTON, Ann F 25 1816 Lancashire
ANDERTON, Ellen F 4 1837 Lancashire
ANDERTON, Wm M 2 1839 Lancashire

are these all siblings do you think?
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I'm just soooo confused now!!

AuntySherlock

OK Let's unconfuse you. Now I am not an expert on this but I know what works for me. You need to sort your information.

I make up family trees in an exercise book. Pick a person as a starting point, then add parents, dates, info. Use a pencil so you can erase as you go.

If you are entering data onto computer the written pages will give you an organised cheat sheet to start your data entry.

It is a bit more work but I find it helps to be able to see the relationship between the different people, and to make certain that the dates of birth and death are relevant and not out of whack.

If you have missing bits of info you can then source certificates to fill in the gaps.

You have some work to do going by the information you have. Good luck. It doesn't take long once you get sorted.

Sorry forgot. Print Off your information from this thread. Don't try to do it looking at the screen. You will get a crick in your neck to start with. Print it off, just highlight, cut and paste which you know how to do, put it into word doc and print it. Then cross things off the copy as you add them to your family tree.

Thank you, I will try that and see if it makes anymore sense :)
It's the dates and ages that keep changing that have me confused!!
