Hi
I am hoping someone in the UK might be able to help me to find where do I go to get the Army Service Record for a relative in the period 1840 - 1875 approx.

Regards, Margot (from Downunder!)

Hi Rita

Many thanks for your response. Is the Office in Kew, the UK Archives Office?

Glad to hear you had such a positive experience with them. I look forward to that too!

Regards, Margot

The National Archives have produced on number of useful guides:

The National Archives won't find the record for you. Do you know which regiment he was in? It would mean a visit to Kew - bit too far for you by the sounds of it!, or you would have to get someone to go for you.

Perhaps the records you got were name indexed online. Margot' s wouldn't be. They won't search through boxes of records.

Not strange Rita. Did you get the naval records from the documentsonline website perhaps- each record costs £3-50. This won't apply in Margot's case.

I think the records you had were name indexed as I said. Margot's won't be and they won't be on Ancestry either - too early.

Hi Rita and Ann

Many thanks for your responses - I am very appreciative.

I think I should email National Archives and tell them everything I know - which isn't all that much. My great-grandfather William Adam, died in 1893 in England, and according to his death certificate he had been with the 72nd Highlanders. He was a Retired Army Captain.

I googled and found information about that Regiment in Wikipedia - where they were posted in what years, etc.

I have not been able to get any birth information for the three children that I actually know he had (there may have been more) in the UK or Scottish birth repositories, which led me to think that perhaps they had been born overseas somewhere.

I also haven't had any success looking in the UK & Scottish Censuses for this family.

I'll put a message on this thread with further information when I have some.

Thanks again.

Regards, Margot

As he was an officer you may find mention of him - promotions etc- in the London Gazette which is searchable online.

Hi Ann

Many thaks for the suggestion to look at London Gazettes. I didn't know they were available on line.

The GREAT thing is that I found the enlistment and two promotions of my Great Grandfather. The notices didn't say where he was at the time, but I'm VERY greatful to have the information I found.

Thanks again
