Surname on Birth Certificate

For some while I've been trawling through the BMD records to find details of my lost cousin. I know that the child was born out of wedlock so I have always searched under their mother's maiden name.
Would it have been possible to register a birth using the father's surname as I suspect my relative was born during the war and left fatherless?
Any thoughts?
Many thanks

I believe the father's name could be on the cert. if he went with the mother to register the birth.

The father's name could be on the certificate if the mother just said she was married to him (as many people did). No one asks to see a marriage certificate when you go to register a child's birth - or they didn't in those days anyway.
