Not sure if this is the right board to be asking this.

We have inherited a commemoration plate with the following wording on it. "NEW SWINDON INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LTD. Founded 1861 Jubilee 1911. Central Premises & Offices EAST ST & HARDING ST".

My Mother in Law came from Swindon so we can assume it would have been presented to a member of her family, however we wanted to know if there was any further information that could be obtained. None of my inlaws' family are alive to ask.

The Co-Op has an archive system in Manchester but are unable to help regarding the names of past employees or anything further about the plate.

I do not live in England so am unable to physically access any records offices.

Is anybody able to throw any light on our plate please? Thank you.

If you put new Swindon Industrial etc into search you should come up with British history on line. This is what it says in the relevant part.

A Swindon Co-operative Society was founded in 1850 with a small shop specializing in the sale of bread. (fn. 28) Twelve years later the New Swindon Industrial Co-operative Society was formed by a group that was dissatisfied with the original society, and in 1880 a third society was formed called the Kingshill Co-operative Society. (fn. 29) In 1965 only the New Swindon Industrial Co-operative Society survived.

Thank you very much Anne. I wasn't too sure where to start looking, so you have pointed me in the right direction. I will have a look at it later today.

Sorry I haven't got back to you before this, but I really do appreciate your help.

Thanks again.
