Thank- you all for your replies. I managed to find my uncle at scotlandspeople and my father's registration. I was going about this wrong to begin with and assumed that records here on genes uk website would show all those born in the uk (including scotland).

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - and have now managed to actually find long distant relatives. Is all very exciting.

Don't know if it's the same in Scotland, but in England if a birth index shows a birth registered as, say, Male Smith it simply means that the birth was registered before the parents had decided on a first name for the child.

If it is the same in Scotland then the birth you have found could be that of your uncle.

As Scotlandspeople only register names in the exact way they were spelled at the time of registration, it may be the surname you're looking for has been spelled slightly differently from your father's.

Try variations on spelling .... sometimes that works.

Both my father and uncle were bron in Scotland. My fathers birth registration details (feb 1945) can be found here in the records. but my uncles does not appear to be listed. Am I correct in assuming that all scottish births would be found in the group of bmd records here?
I have found a birth within the family for the year of my uncle, but there is no name - child is marked (MALE) - this would indicate possible adoption or change of registration details, yet there is no indication of such - any ideas???

Scotland don't have the 1911 census yet but if you put details in the records office board you might get someone going to the Edinburgh office that can check for you on earlier census's . and if i remember correctly Kilwinning comes under Ayrshire

Scotland is not due to release details of the 1911 census till around 2011.

If you are searching for unusual names and you can locate them say in the Kilwinning area, they might be reasonably easy to find.

Looking at an online map Kilwinning seems to be a large town in Ayrshire slightly north west of Kilmarnock.

I am looking for relatives in Kilwinning (i think i have spelt that correctly). Is Scotland included in the 1911 census and freeBMD.
