Hi Margaret
I was the first of 6 children to marry and also the first to have children 6 years later.
We asked when I gave up work that the adults stopped giving us gifts and said that if they were happy to give to our children and any subsequent others ie nieces or nephews that we felt a good age to stop was 16 as they usually got part time jobs by then and also have their own tastes too. Like yourself we felt 18 and/or 21 were special as are engagements and weddings too.
I have 13 nieces and nephews altogether and now only have 2 that are under 16 for birthdays and Christmas too, by the way.

We don't yet have grandchildren or any great nieces or nephews.

Might help, or maybe not?

i STILL SEND CARDS TO MINE AND BUY THEM PRESENTS ,BUT THE OLDER ONES GET MONEY ,CAN BE QUITE EXPENSIVE 26 G,CHILDREN AND COMING UP TO 4 G,GRANDCHILDREN,I HOPE THERES NO MORE WELL AT LEAST NOT YET,HOW ARE YOU gINA

thats only on my side we have the family here,did you get the photo i sent you Jan took it today,just had thought my g,daughter is coming over for my birthday,so do you want to sent the cards to her and she can bring them to me,thats if its ok with you

thank you all for your thoughts I have always given to the grandchildren for their birthdays and christmas but i think it is gettind a bit expensive now I mean when they are at work how can you give them money they all come so close together just today had a 21st last week an 18th next week a 19th ans ome others coming up only still got to young ones 11 and 14.

It stops when you can no longer afford it love.
Never be afraid to say... "I'm sorry, but as much as I love you I can't afford it."
A well loved grandchild will say.... "never mind Gran/granddad You don't need to spend money on me."

wise words Deanna. We can still afford to give to our grandchildren, the older ones 17,21 in July and 20 in December have money But then so do our children and their OHs as we live away and to transfer money is safer and easier than sending presents. The two youngest get presents.
Nieces, we only give to the youngest great niece now.

I fully agree with Ann. Once my nephews & niece earned more than me - presents stopped!!
I had to bludgeon my SIL to stop sending presents to my daughters (she had sons). In the end I told her that all I would send her sons was 'Lynx' (which I knew both she and her sons hated) If she continued sending presents to my daughters.
However, she is welcome to send presents to my grandchildren(one boy, one girl) as she hasn't got any yet!! LOL
