whats the best way of finding information about an ancestor who was in the Royal Navy?

My grandad Thomas Wiggin was a sailor on HMS inflexible in the early 1900's.

I would be grateful for any help

Try the Royal Navy Website, they should be able to tell you where to apply.
Good luck,

Here is a link to the Veterans agency for Royal Navy Records

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/royal_navy.html

Might be worth giving them a ring , they may help you.
There is also the National Archives which is searchable online
