I've potted up the toms, peppers and chilis. Now have one cucumber plant to do. I do not have a greenhouse and my gardening book talks about greenhouses.

I can put it in a large pot in the middle of the garden (gravelled area to keep most of the slugs/snails off). I have canes somewhere. It will be out of the wind and get plenty of sunshine (assuming we have sun).

Will that be OK do you think - or does it need perhaps a bit more shade? I'm only assuming sun because of the greenhouse refs. And I don't want to put it into the flowerbed or against the fence with trellis as I think the slugs/snails would eat it in no time.

Can you get one of those little portable greenhouses, they are only small but in a sunny spot in your garden it would be ideal for your cucumbers. They are a basic frame, about 2ft x 4ft, plastic covered with a zip door. My Mum's got one as she didn't want a full greenhouse in the garden.

Do I have to?

I suppose you must be right if there are no non-greenhouse plants ...

Perhaps I will start him on kitchen window sill - it's only the one plant so it does seem a bit extravagant ...

I will have a look though - thanks Teresa.

Well it will also make a good winter shelter for some of your more delicate plants, and a nice little 'potting shed' for next years salad plants to grow from seed.
