Hi Bob... yes, me too! It wasn't really there all that long... for about 5 minutes before I put the thread up, and then a minute or two before I updated... it flew off very strongly... the water and brief rest seemed to enervate it! So fingers crossed... it looked a very noble bird, lol.... and clever too, tapping the glass to attract my attention!! ;¬))

Candyman, has me wondering if my Dad every did the uthinkable.

I knew all his pigeons by name and sometimes a couple would disappear. I always believed that they had stopped over with someone else when they did not come home.

I could not have been more then 10 at the time and one of my chores was to feed the pigeons before school in the mornings as Dad would work many a night shift.

Until one afternoon when I got home from school and found half a dozen dead pigeons on my bed left for me by Mum's water spaniel Gypsy. I was blamed for not securing the cage door properly but I know that I did and was unfairly punished for something I did not do.

Shortly after we moved and Dad stopped racing pigeons and kept budgies instead for a few years, then love birds and finally his favorite, cockatiels. He had half a dozen of them walking around the house over the cats and dog who dare not even look at them. Dad made miniature ladders that he fixed to our old apricot tree and put their "night cage" out next to the tree when the sun came up.

He would sit on the back veranda and drink a pot of black peculated coffee and smoke his pipe. Some mornings before going to work I would join him and watch the birds waddle to the nearest ladder and climb up by using their strong beaks.

Wonderful memories of another life time.

Thank you all.... I have resolved it..... I put a dish of water into the guttering.. the cats would have got it if I had put it on the floor, or on the shed roof... I put a DIY face mask on, lol... must have looked a lovely sight!! and rubber gloves, lol

Bird drank for a little while, and then just sat tapping the glass for a few minutes whilst I was typing.... and flew away just before I started this post. So hopefully it will carry on it's journey and all will be well.

Thank you so much for replying... I did wonder if it might come to a premature end if it's owner caught up with it, lol!!

I like to think it was typing *Thank you* lol.... it tapped with it's beak to attract my attention in the first place!

What if the bird does not know which way is home or is too weak to fly.?

I would feed it and then try and find out who it belongs to.

A racing pigeon resting should NOT be fed.....(else it might decide to stay)....provide water, yes........
and it should decide to leave for home under its own steam......

Can't help you with who to contact, but there must be a pigeon racing society or something who might send someone out to check the rings on it's leg.

My late Dad used to race pigeons and we often had unknown bird stop over. Or maybe someone that you know could check the rings for you. They are very docile if approached with care as not to frighten them, whispering softly also helps. As a child I hand raised many a pigeon that had been kicked out of the nest.

You don't have to put water and seed high up where the bird is. Put it on the ground where it can see the food. A handful of uncooked rice will also do. Maybe, it's a bit disorientated or just resting.

Morning Daff .Try googling racing pidgeon society they give good advice as to what to do if you have a lost or tired pidg.
We had one last year and I crawled around the lawn until I got its number .I was put in touch with the owner and he arranged for a local pidgeon man to come and get it and then had it couriered back up to Yorkshire!!!!
Good luck.Sometimes after a rest they may just take off.I put a cardboard box with some water and food in the garden up against the hedge.

hi, hope all is well. Right pigeon is hot and tired so best is to leave water and some seed if you think it in danger contact RSPCA and they will give you number of local pigeon fancier and they will tell where it from from either address stamped on underside of wing or by the rings(it has 2 rings as rubber on is a racing ring and would have been racing since Saturday but young bird do get lost). Hope all goes well.

Has landed on my glass roof!! I can't put up seed and water for it... and am not close enough to read the tags on it's legs... it has two.. tags, I mean, not legs... although it does have two of those!!

I can't lift it... I am still neutropenic (low immunity) enough to need to keep away from birds... and it is probably safer from Jethro and Hermie where it is (they are my two little hunters, the girls aren't interested anymore unless it comes out of a packet or a tin, lol) BUT... I can't put water and seed up there to help it regain it's energy...... who should I contact, any ideas?
