Our council collects rags in the recycling box., which is very handy.

Sharron, I dont know if the Salvation Army still do it, but I was told to put clean old clothes in their bins, as they send them to a place for rags, and get money on them. A lady I know who goes to SA, said that they used to make the backs of TV's from material after some sort of processing.

I generally do this, as I have not heard any different.

In 2002 I took three pairs of comfortable old trousers with me when I went to visit friends in Africa. Guess what I am wearing today.

One reason I don't throw clothes out more often is that I don't really know where to throw them.Stuff the charity shops and jumble sales wouldn't want (they don't have much wear left in them when I am done).Do they go in the dustbin?

I have done all the good intention stuff with the cotton and when I do do some dusting ah-hem I have all the dusters I need and I have had a patchwork going for about thirty years now but where do you put the garment you have cut out the material from for the patchwork?

What a shame we can't all get together and pile in our unwanted clothes to exchange with each other, my colouring has changed now so lots of things I am hoarding wouldn't suit me now even if I could get into them. Will have to have a clear out soon, maybe I will give them to my friend for her boot sale or something. Probably several things with labels still on, knowing me! Did sort out my underwear drawer the other day, have some pretty bras but no way do they fit, but I am losing a little weight so will hang on to them for the mo, it's always the first place to lose weight I find lol Will never get back to the poached eggs days tho

Jean - a couple of years ago I knitted myself a bright lemony yellowly coloured jumper - not the normañ colour I would wear but whatever and I too have had a few comments made about it,

I still have a skirt that I made at school. I left in 1951! A great many of my sweaters are home knitted and some are over 20yrs old, but still good enough to cause comment. One vivid pink jumper caused a young checkout boy to say how nice it was to see someone not afraid to wear a bit of colour!

Weather being warmer, I got out a silk nightdress, and when I thought back I bought it in M&S just before I moved to Southampton, 32 years ago,Then I realized some briefs I still had I bought at the same time. Why have they lasted so long - made in England.

OH and I did have a clear out though, he put out for charity too short shorts, which he said he has not got the legs for now.

I cleared out bras that I had been fitted for, and cost a fortune, the reason I had to do this, the lace caused me to come out in a rash. Where made- China.

I still left a dress I bought in 1986, and has been brought out time and time again for weddings, christenings, and other parties. This was priced at £50, but owing to a flaw on the tie around the neck, which I pointed out to the Shop Assistant, was allowed to purchase for £15. I had my fingers crossed that they did not have another dress the same which was perfect.

Silly question!

I wear clothes until they fall apart or until I get completely and utterly bored with them. For most of my life (apart from pregnancy and post-menopausal plumping up and losing it again) I've been the same size. If I still had my South Sea Bubble jeans/shorts that I had at age sixteen they would still fit and I'd still wear them!!

I must admit though I did have a go at clearing out my wardrobe a few weeks ago - inspired by Gok and his capsule wardrobe programme. I got rid of lots of stuff I was bored with and a few things that I just can't be bothered to iron. I've hung onto a few things that I don't wear (at the moment) because I love them too much to part with them - but only a few things!

Good luck with it - you will really appreciate the space that you end up with. And a capsule wardrobe is a great theory - even if I can't put it into practice!

and I still have clothes that I bought with me to Spain 8 years ago - some things are 12 years old or more - yet I cannot bring myself to put them in the recycle clothes bins. Am I the only one who hordes clothes ?
