Hubby, brother, daughters and myself are off to the Nia in Birmingham tonight to see Jeff Wayne's musical version of War of the Worlds. Can't wait. It's the 30th anniversary tour. Hubby and I loved the music when it first came out. when the girls were about 9 and 5 I put the album on and made them lie on the floor to listen to it and imagine the scenes, (just like we used to listen to the wireless when there was no telly) There is a part in it when Richard Burton is talking about when the lid of the cylinder unscrews and falls off. Well when it fell off I poked the eldest in her ribs, it was so funny she jumped a mile and almost hit the ceiling.

My favourite song has to be Forever Autumn sung by Justin Hayward.

For those interested here it is.

Well we had an absolutely awesome time last night. We got to Brum at 4.30 and went to Wagamama's for a meal, (it's a Japenese resturant chain and the food is brilliant) It was the 1st time my brother had been and he really enjoyed it. We then walked up New St and headed towards the NIA. My brother hadn't been to Birmingham for about 30 years and was amazed at how much it had changed. We crossed the canal bridge and stood outside having a ciggie before we went in, when all of a sudden this couple walked past us, I recognised him straight away. It was my hubby's best friend from school and they hadn't seen each other for 9 years, so that was a nice surprise.
We went into the arena at 7pm and found our seats, we were in the upper tier but in the 2nd block closest to the stage so we had a fantastic view. In the background they were playing snippets of differently arranged music from the show. The show began at 8.05pm with Richard Burton uttering the famous first lines from HG Wells book then the music started. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and it was just amazing. I could go into indepth details of each song, but in case anyone is going to see the show I don't want to spoil it, but the effects were awesome, brilliant, fantastic and amazing. There were 2 highlights for me during the performance, the one being when Justin came down to sing Forever Autumn and the 2nd being after the show had finished.
Nowadays at a lot of live shows you can get a cd of the live show that you have seen, my brother decided he wanted a copy and had pre-ordered it. so while we were waiting for it, hubby the girls and I went outside. We were getting a bit concerned about how long it was taking as we had to get back to New st to catch the last train back. Lyndsey went off to look for my brother, but he had gone a different way and after a few minutes he shouted over the balcony that he would be with us in a short while. Lyndsey came running back saying that Alexis James who was playing the Artillery man, was stood just up the path from us talking on his mobile phone, We went running up and he was just about to walk away when I shouted his name. Nobody who was walking past realised who he was. He turned round and I asked him for his autograph so he signed my programme and also my brothers, and then I got to have my photo taken with him, he asked us if we had enjoyed the show and wished us a safe journey home, by the time we walked away there were several people queing to get his autograph. He seemed genuinely pleased that someone had recognised him. He is a very nice looking man.

We had a wonderful night and would recommend anyone if they get the chance to go and see the show.

It's brilliant isn't it, Helen?

We didn't see it this time but have seen the last two tours at the NEC. I wasn't sure they'd be able to stage it but was so impressed with the way it was done.
