Hi Sharron, yes it is a big commitment, and you do have a lot to cope with already. Maybe you could talk to the Centre who could consider all you do and advise on how much time it would take out of your already busy day.
I would have some if I had the room but nowhere in o.h.'s small garden for them and too many cats around that come in here already.

There is a centre near Chichester called the Apuldram Centre which is for the less abled. It grows fruit and veg for sale and they make cakes and preserves. They have recently started a scheme where they will make you a chicken ark and provide you with four rescued battery hens for a sum of money,I can't remember how much.

They will even come round and see to your hens when you are on holiday.

I keep toying with the idea of having some hens but it is a big commitment.

Rescued hens to get new homes

Little Hen Rescue

21 June 2009 17:16

Ten thousand hens rescued from slaughter by a Norfolk charity are on their way to new homes.

Little Hen Rescue, in Newton Flotman, near Norwich, offered to take the birds from a farmer who is closing down, to save them from slaughter.

Any birds not re-homed would have been killed but after an appeal enough people came forward.

Emma Hayes from the charity said the last 1, 000 birds have been picked up from the farmer.

this is the place that wanted little sweaters knitted for the hens as when they first arrive they don't have many feathers and once they are settled into their new homes, the stress is reduced so new feathers grow.
