What would you think would be appropriate ...Traditional or something different
(2nd marriage and in their late 50s )

I'd go with something traditional, but keep it in the colour scheme. I did my friends cake, they were in their late 40's second marriage. I made sugar flowers to match her planned bouquet, and ribbon to match too. Two tiers, top tier sponge, and bottom tier traditional fruit.

Like Susan, my daughter had a square cake done up like a parcel with a ribbon, and 3 tiers of small square cakes iced......it looked so good.....

...a friend of mine had a pile of profiteroles.......I think it IS a wedding cake in some countries, but again it looked lovely......

....some of the traditional cakes look lovely too, especially the ones with real flowers....

For a second time around I would ( did ) go with something different.

Susan I love the look of those fairy cake stands. Sally my OH would have had profiteroles cept for the fact that I didn't give him the chance to ( long standing joke ), but they do look good.

Jen in the end It is down to what the bride and groom want. If they want traditional then it's appropiate .....after all it's their day.

edits to say I had 3 hearts set in a heart shape ( not tiered ) 2 small sponge/fruit type and a lg fruit ( which had to travel )

we had just one tier...just a little flower display in the middle all to match the colours which was peach and cream, a friend made the cake and the decorations that went on it I was thrilled to bits with the result, and save them, sadly the friend died last year.

Personally, I would think that they should choose whatever makes them happy,

We had a two tier lemon colored fruitcake instead of the traditional white marzipan. The bottom was square shaped and the top in a horse shoe, decorated with marzipan flowers with silver leaves.

I don't think it's a case of what is 'appropriate'. It's what they want that matters, no matter what age they are or how many times they've been married previously. To me those things are irrelevant.

I made wedding cakes for some years
Always found it best for them to decide , but give them a little help if needed

Mine was a two tier.. boring fruit one.
I know somebody who had fruit on top.plain sponge in middle and chocolate at the bottom.

If you have someone making sugarcraft flowers it is worth thinking about having the flowers made out of cold porcelain paste instead. They look the same and are easier to keep afterwards.
I've made them for a Golden Wedding cake for friends and they kept their little flower spray which went on their cake.

Cat ,,,, I agree with you they should have been asked
Friends of the Bride and Groom told them they were getting the wedding
cake ... A surprise.... so Bride didn't know what kind of cake it was
As I am doing the catering I needed to know the colour theme
for flowers and table clothes etc
So went and asked what colour they were having on the cake ....
When they told me what they had ordered I knew the Bride would hate it
and said she would have liked a more traditional cake
