Some of these so-called 'Freeview' sites are a cop-out. They lure you to them in expectation, then they hit you with their charges list. Whats the point (for us) paying first, without knowing you've found the right person or document ? I'm not commiting myself to a years fees, no matter how reduced, without having a TRUE free test. Most of these obscure sites, when you get onto them, turn out to be part of the ancestry.com outfit. no wonder!

You have also touched on the problem of pay per view. Brilliant if you get the information you are looking for straight, but a big rip-off if you dont?

Free sites I always have open before starting a research session are Free BMD and the IGI.

Then depending on the areas I am researching there are others I could not be without. Lancasahire On-line Parish Program, Free Reg (parish registers and part of Free BMD), South Derbyshire Genealigy Pages, to name but a few. Other members will be able to advise many many more.

Just putting a name in and hoping for a result willl most likely get you an Ancestry affiliated site, it is far better to go looking for specific resources particular to your area of research.

Thanks BrinsleyS--( Sheridan is it?) I've noted those sites you listed. I have used CheshireBMD LancashireBMD before with limited success. That is a big area --especially Liverpool, and they have'nt got anywhere near completion yet, but they are getting there, and very grateful we should all be.---regards--Arfermo.

on the point of pay per view,I found Scotlandspeople a really expensive
site-they show you no details whatsoever until you payout.then its the wrong person after all.
in fact,Istillhave some credit left on the site ,and am too annoyed to use it!

Yes Maureen I agree with you.
Scotlands people is VERY dear.
I have also found that I can search for a name which I KNOW is there, and perhaps have even found it before, and will be told there is no one of that name there!
It also cuts out after a while, which is so frustrating if I turn around to do a bit of work, then turn back to the computer!
WHY should they do that?
Do any of you work on your tree along side searching, or am I alone in this?

I have never understood why credits have a time limit on some sites.It is just a way to screw another couple of bob out of you.

The time limit thing really p....s me off good time. There is no need for it at all.

What is worse is when you get an email telling you you have xxx days to go and would you like to pay an extra yyy £ to preserve your credits and buy some more as well.

How many of us have been there.....?
