Karen, I tried his novels a few years ago (more than I probably care to remember!) I wonder if I was scarred after having the Mayor of Casterbridge rammed down my throat in every English lesson!!

Perhaps I would have better success if I tried now *Adds to list of things to do before I'm 50 - Read a Hardy novel and enjoy it !! *

I love anything Thomas Hardy

On the subject of "entrepreneurs", my daughter studied the art of the North East at Uni. She made me laugh with numerous examples of studies of a very pretty young girl sitting outside a fisherman's shanty, whittling a stick.

I dare bet that that kid was sent outside to "whittle" every time a young aristocrat with cash and a pallette showed his face!

My ex used to live in Stinsford.
When they visited their dad, our girls and their stepbrothers used to pick wild flowers and sell them outside Hardy's house!
Entrepeneurs or what!!!??
For any of you who have read The Mayor of Casterbridge - sadly the Weydon Priors (based on the Weyhill Fair) area is now an industrial estate - though it does retain one wall!

I just love Hardy:)))

I loved the film but that could have been because Terence Stamp was unforgivingly handsome in it :)

I know Tess is one of David's favourite heroines but she was another one who couldn't work out where she was best off :)

Loved the book but could not get into any of Hardy's others! I did The Mayor Of Casterbridge for English O Level and hated it....

I love the book and the BBC (I think) did an excellent adaptation a few years ago but Julie Christie film was crap.

I read the book when I was about 15, and Bathsheba annoyed the hell out of me! Why could she not see she was supposed to be with Gabriel and stop faffing about lol. ( It would have been a much shorter book I grant you !)
