Dermot
It seems to me that we don't necessarily get the same Hot Match as our "sharing" names.

Linda :o)

Logically, the tree owners of our Hot Matches would have received a similar list. Any chance they might spot a family connection that we are unaware of?

My HMs are similar to Linda's - TOTAL non-matches. I cannot see an ICT explanation for this.

Also, on several HMs, where the sole individual does match details, the match is repeated 3 times!

The match software seems to be EXTREMELY crude and the programming flawed. I wonder if they will refund part of our subscriptions??? ROTFL

Thank you Brinsley S
I knew about only matching name and date. Even had a few Unknowns, which I just delete and ignore.

But I was surprised to see such non matches as completely different names BOTH and dates too. Only one name out of about 8 was the match.

I wait for my next batch with baited breath

One of the reasons this happens, Linda, is when you or the other person uploads a new tree to the site, after the last HotMatch run, which means all the pointers are out of synch.. It will sort itself out in due course.

Tinas's "problem" is a feature of the site. HotMatches don't check the place of birth.

Yes it would be brilliant if it did, but there are two main problems. One of computing power, it needs a big big processor to match a number of words of text, and the second that there are so many different variations in the way that people enter place names.

For example, is S'port Lancashire the same as Southport Lancs, or worse than that North Meols, Lancashire? A human would say yes they all match, but to program a computer to do the same, and given the millions of variations all over the world is well nigh on impossible.

I was involved with a name and address matching project with a major bank a few years ago. It cost £10 million to implement and in the end it was still down to the human to accept or reject possible matches. No different to GR really.

Perhaps GR should look at a country match, then perhaps a county match. Might be implemented without too much effort.

P.S. one of the main problems with implementing a decent solution is with people importing gedcom files with incomplete information. I have seen name with missing dates, missing places and all sorts of rubbish.

Hi Linda. Hope you are well.
I have only just started, at long last, doing my tree on gr, and got a hot match for someone with the same name, but who was born on the other end of the world.

So, how can that be a match, let alone a HOTMATCH lol!!

Linda, I seldom get anyone that matches mine. There is only one other that shows up each time, and he is a fourth cousin, and I gave him most of what he has got. Last time I got someone that was abroad somewhere, whilst mine are Northants and Cambs. How these could be a hot match I'll never know
