You copied a news item and therefore are using information in the 'pubic domain' I wouldnt think twice about using the information in these circumstances

I agree with Mrs Grumpy. If you don't include the name, you could be depriving lots of other relatives of the info.

Diplomacy needed. A vague e-mail might be more appropriate. How about:-

"I believe I may have some historical information about a member in your tree, which may be of some use to you. I found it by chance in some newspaper archives dated ........

If you are interested in learning more, I'd be happy to advise you of its source."

I think you should leave his name in.

I would love to come across any snippets about any of mine - even "bad" snippets. So frustrating reading an interesting historical true story and not knowing who it refers to ...

The story only turns up if you search newspaper archives. I did think of emailing the person who definitley has him in their tree but not sure how they would respond. I think I'll risk an email

Have you tried searching on line to see if it is already on the web? Or thought about approaching the person whose tree he is in?

Copying an article from a news item in a local journal of 1893 for our small community website. The article names a chap who after a strange and amusing incident ended up a patient in a lunatic asylum. I checked and found at least one GR member who has him in their tree. Should I just print it in any case as there is little chance of it coming to their attention, or should I scrub out the details? If I do the latter then some might come to the wrong conclusion about who is being refered to. What do you think?
