Name collectors, I just don't get it!

I had a 'name collector' - and what's annoying is, I contacted him!
He wanted info about my dad's adopted father (so no relation at all).
I was all set to let him know what I knew - when I realised he was copying my tree - and in particular, my mum's side!
Quickly closed my tree down - and the Pr*t has just guessed their place/date of birth etc., so nothing's right, and he didn't get the information about my dad's adopted father - the only person he was vaguely related to me by!
Sad really.

Thank you Sliwowski, that gives a different perspective on things.

For me 30,000 names is 30,000 stories (not that I yet have that many) each different and unique. Couldn't possibly be just a name collector. I can't see the point in that. For me it's nothing to do with numbers, more to do with finding out how different the paths people took were and finding out how/where all common descendants have ended up.

Trouble is Patricia there is no way I can plough thru that lot to find a connection and the tree owner seems reluctant to tell me. I will just leave it at that.
Personally I enjoy every aspect of researching my family and their stories and I take great pride in researching everything thoroughly and confirming my findings. Besides I do not want to make mistakes and pass on to others. I am just concerned that large trees like this are not researched properly but then I never add anyones info to my tree unless I check it first and confirm their findings.

I am not knocking these members but just trying to understand why.

30,000 names that's alot!. It's interesting to see who we are related to even if it is a very slim link.

Hi,

I have come across members on GR who have requested to look at my tree, or have opened their tree to me and there are thousnads of names on their tree. Just this week one person has over 30,000 names on their tree and when I asked their connection they just sent me a message saying extremely remote connection. Now I don't want to criticise anyone on here but I am just wondering why people collect names. Does anyone know why? Thank you.
