I have just phoned the RSPCA to report someone leaving a dog in a car in a car park today, having bought a ticket for 4 hours. OK today is cooler than it has been, but it is forecast to get sunnier as the day goes on.

I asked the RSPCA whether I was over-reacting and they said no, not at all, as a dog can die in 20 minutes in a car, even if the windows are open, as the car acts as a greenhouse.

I am glad I called, I know many dog owners will say they are responsible and only leave dogs in cars etc if it is safe to do so, but I personally think you can't be too careful.

We Do leave our dogs in the car on occasions, but either in the shade with water and the windows partially down or else with the tailgate up and the dogs locked in their cage with reflective sunshades and water.

They both love the car and if we are away will often go into their cage from choice.

But with the temperatures of the last few days I don't think we would risk leaving them in there at all.

Shocking and also interesting if , and I quote "I believe the Police complaints have washed their hands of it, as the dogs weren't in a police vehicle."

I always though police dogs were seen as officers of the law, not just your average pet pouch protected by SPCA laws etc.

To my knowledge to injure,kick or harm a police dog is actually a criminal offense, equal in punishment if you were to do the same to a police officer on or off duty.

It is dreadfully sad that these animals have had to suffer such an awful death and I am sure that dog handler is in bits over it, because as has been said, they are usually very attached to their dogs and do have them at home and become close to them. Of course he would have known the outcome but might not have meant to be very long, might have been distracted while away from the car, might have been thinking of something else and accidentally closed the windows of the car, all might haves and I expect most of us have at some time done things we haven't meant to do. In this case animals suffered but it wasn't as if he had taken them shopping or to a fete or something and left them as people have been known to do.
I feel very sorry for the dogs but sad for the handler too

I don't agree, in this instance, Joan... this was a professional dog handler, off duty, with two dogs left in his vehicle while he went into the police station... he/she, as a professional, would have been very aware of how the heat would affect those animals,, it would have formed a part of basic dog handling training and he/she caused the death of two off duty police recruits... the fact that they are dogs is irrelevent... believe me, I know this for a fact, having lived amongst specialist animal trainers (military and police) for a number of years.

The fact that the police have themselves called in the RSPCA, who have powers of prosecution in their own right, speaks volumes to me... this handler was negligent at the very least... and deserves to be drummed out of the force, and never allowed to have animals again.

The only excuse would be that he was taken very ill whilst inside the police station.... or actually died himself, and that no-one realised the dogs were in the vehicle.

These were as I understand it recently donated dogs.......

I bet the previous owners now regret their donation decision.........

It is better that the RSPCA are involved... the report I read was that the police involved them straight away... no cover up here I imagine... and this handler should never work, or be allowed to have, dogs again..... I'd like 5 minutes with him, I can tell you!!

I believe the Police complaints have washed their hands of it, as the dogs weren't in a police vehicle, but a private car. The RSPCA are now looking into the case. I hope they throw the book at the officer concerned.

I couldn't believe this when I heard it on the news. I'm horrified !!

FFS..people on here know what i thinik abt my doggies and how i love them....................this story, makes me wanna VOMIT;.

Handler was off duty.... and hasn't been suspended.

I'd like to suspend him... by a rope from Trent Bridge, he was a professional.... he was aware of what heat can do in a short space of time.

I hope he is sacked.

Common sense went out the window.There is NO excuse.I don't even want to think of the distress that those dogs went through before they died.

i cant believe this has happened,they were left in car outside police station! unneccessary death of animals is £20.000 fine & 6months imprisonment!!
