Janice is spot on.

A while ago I heard a story of somemone who believed they had just made contact with their second cousin five times removed.

Think about that one, shows how confusing it can get until you get your brain around it.

There are actually 2 questions at the top of the page which is why people are disagreeing!

The brother's grandchildren are your wife's 2nd cousins.

Your children are 3rd cousins to the brother's gt-grandchildren.

Its still 3rd cousins by my count

They would be 2nd cousins, their common ancestor is your wifes Great Grandparent.

1st cousins share the same grandparents.

2nd cousins share the same great-grandparents etc

If there's a mismatch in the generations, take the one that works as above, then each generation different is removed.

Without trying to confuse you the way I understand it is as follows.

Your wife's grandfather has a brother, so your wife's parent and the grandfather's brother's children are first cousins.

His grandchildren and your wife are 1st cousins once removed.

His great grandchildren and your children are 2nd cousins.

Your wifes parent and children of brother 1st cousins
your wife and grd children of the brother 2nd cousins
Your children and grt grandchildren of brother 3rd cousins

Can you help explain how my wife is related to...

My wife's grandfather has a brother. What relationship would this brother's grand children be to my wife.

What relationship would our children be to the great grand children of the brother.
