Debate :) Why are 'greenies' often derided

or at least dismissed as a little odd?

I noticed a reference (on another unrelated thread) to 'saving a whale' (dismissive I thought) , often see 'tree hugger' used as a rather derisory reference.

Veggies always get it in the neck lol ( we are all just "squeamish" for one thing), what do we "eat on Christmas day"? ( can't tell you the number of times virtual strangers, shop owners have asked me that....do I ask them?!)

Why is wanting to preserve 'life', be it whales, trees or creepycrawlies looked at as 'odd'?

( I may be odd, in fact am more than happy to be so lol)

I don't think Swampy did too many favours for those who just want to care for their environmnent, as much as I admire his direct approach lol

Even Prince Charles has been dismissed as a little oddball in the past for his views (and actions) on the environment, though he has been proved right.

I really think it's because of the small number of people who make a big noise about it, especially those taking direct action. If you're an environmentalist, you're mad, if you're a conservationist, you're ok. It's all in the name lol

Lol Teresa, haven't hear 'Swampy' mentioned for a long time...wonder what he's doing now?

Just googled him, he was at Heathrow in 2007, but he keeps a low profile now. He hasn't been too involved in anything for a few years, but couldn't resist the stand-off at Heathrow.

However, protestors don't really want the media following Swampy around as it distracts from what they are there for, so he joins in, attends etc, but keeps his head down.

I think it's a shame that society has to put a label on anyone whose views differ from our own:

surely, we are what we are and our beliefs ae our beliefs.

I dislike anyone being de-cried for their ethics - smacks of stupidity to me.

I dont give a fig what people think of me,Im happy with who I am.

Hi Rose -

Not odd in my book!

The same seems to apply to people who don't advocate hanging, castration, public flogging or national service for all - dubbed 'bleeding hearts' and 'do-gooders' ;-))

Hi Roxanne :)

Sheila , I have been described ( by a friend lol) as a 'bleeding heart, leftie, liberal " :) ...she doesn't think I am now...but I haven't changed, it is her perception that has , as she has moved closer to what I always believed lol

No I hadn't Roxanne, one of the things I like about having moved here is that the re-cycling facilities are very good, it pained me to put so much plastic in the bin ( though paper and tins were collected in Wales) but here I can pop it down to asda and the council collect pretty much everything else :)

Here too Rose:-)) we have great Facilities, which does make a huge difference.
I have always hated plastic water bottles but admit I did buy them at one time,I bought a very good filter and now dont buy bottled water.

Jac Report 9 Jul 2009 16:05

We re-use the plastic bottles as water fillers at the allotment - the bottom is cut off the bottle and the neck end placed towards the roots of the plants - water is then fed down the length of the bottle and it reaches the parts that need the water most!

I dont buy bottled water, cos I think that that which is given to us freely from above should be free to all to enjoy. Water filters work well and as you've already paid for the water once, why pay for it twice just cos someone has bottled it for you?

My recycling bins are always full and ready for collection: what does grieve me though is when I buy compost and find bits of glass, plastic, paper, wire etc. in it. Obviously not everyone recycles properly yet - unfortunately.
