As a mother who has a son who has served in Afghanistan I want to thank your son for his gesture....it is exactly this sort of response that is so uplifting.
My son will not be returning in the near future BUT when he was out there we were allways worried. One day he sent me a message saying" If I am killed out her please do not grieve for me, I have had a great life a good education have wonderful brothers , a great sister and two good step brothers. I was able to choose what I wanted to do when so many others cannot. I am afraid at times but who isn't, I have been well trained, lead a team of men and we would all protect each other. I do not want to die but if I do remember that you always said we are here for a special time and in order to good in the world and that is my motto.
Please everyone do not think that he has always been an angel he is a normal young man who was bright enough to do what he wanted and he has enjoyed and still is enjoying his life, I try to remember that he is doing exactly what he wanted to do and worked very hard to be given an amazing opportuniy to be trained somewhere very special.

I wonder if we could have moment each day just to stay silent and think of all our people who are serving across the world, and to have positive thoughts for the families of those who will be returning far earlier than they ever thought.

Prayers and positive thinking to everyone.

Bossyboots, wish I knew your proper name, but yes, I can understand where you are coming from, my Son Robert who put that thread on facebook, was in Iraq and was along side the Dessert Rats, while they were shooting people, to defend themselves, he was the paramedic that put them to rights, I saw him on a news clip on Sky, giving a litttle lad a drink from his flask, I was so proud of him, as you must be, and thankfully he is home safe and sound and now out of the army, but on the streets with the ambulance service, God bless our service Men and our Sons and daughters. XX..

Gillian and Bossyboots, you have lovely sons, and I am glad you have them home with you now. I can't imagine how those families feel when they get the visit that tells them the worst, I am selfish and feel glad my son decided against joining the forces. He had at one time thought he would sign up with the Army when he was not long left school. I don't think I could have coped, had he gone to somewhere like Afghanistan etc.

May all those brave servicemen and women who have lost their lives, Rest in Peace.
