SRS, I am still interested but at present I am concentrating on scanning all the old photos. I had to take some of my mothers/grandmothers albums apart to do it. Luckily most of the people are named, so after scanning I put the scans into folders, then if I want a photo of a particular person I can find it more easily instead of having to wade through heaps of photos and albums.

I am also scanning things mum put into scrapbooks. There are her driving licences from the 30s, some shooting targets that she and dad did in the 30s in one of those shooting booth things (she scored a little higher than he did!), various newspaper cuttings with exam results, including her piano exams from the 10s. Plenty of other things, I am far from finished, so it will keep me busy while enabling me to keep an eye on my OH. And if the scrapbooks get destroyed somehow in the future, at least I have a lot of the stuff on my computer (will burn to discs later) for my children/grandchildren and other interested relatives.

I do have a couple of lines back to the 1600s. The rest, I hope to find relatives on GR who can help, although I do like to confirm things for myself (but as dad used to say, cheggars cant be boosers.)

On the Ancestry website some idiot at some stage married my oldest sister to a man b in USA in 1723. About 90 people have copied it. Some also have my sisters correct father with his y.o.b. correctly as 1899. How good is your mathematics? Theirs is obviously no good along with their research. Now there are people on My Heritage website who have the same idiotic error. At least it doesnt cost me anything to contact them but I am not a member of Ancestry so have to take up their 14 day free trials to try to get the idiots there to correct their trees. Only a few have done so.

Deanna,
Reading books about the history of their villages sometimes throws up surprises. It's interesting in its own right, but sometimes there are photos.
Good luck,
Janice

I have not given up, but have taken a different route for a while.
I was so frustrated searching for one of my... G.G.Grandfathers that after two years I started on another branch.
I WILL come back to him, but I felt that I needed a rest from him for a while.
What I want to do is to find out their history, I
don't find that easy.
Do any of you have any tips on how to do this?

There is a lady who brings me my library books every month, and she finds out so many interesting facts about her ancestors.
I would love to be able to do it, but can't.
Even the simplest of things elude me.
My granny's children were born in different places, but all around the same area.
I would love to find out WHY?
Was my grandad laid off work and had to find another job 'down the road'?
Did they have to move house?
I do search, but what am I doing wrong, and what are others doing right?

I have put it on hold for a while... my concentration was shot to pieces, and now it is coming back, plus my health and stamina are so much better, I find I have soooooo many things I want to do!... My Ancestry subs lapsed while I was ill... I am waiting for the next special offer before I rejoin, lolol

Meanwhile, I shall do a bit more on my mum's side, with the photos and memorabilia she has just given me, so that I can build a *memory scrapbook* for her. She has dementia, but early, at the moment.

And I have decorating, and gardening, and my book to write..... so much to do!! ;¬))

Love

No, SRS, not actually given up. Have got back to 1750, and now in the process of trying to get further back, aka records held by Northants and Peterborough. I have everyone between now and back to that date, with the exception of two Gt.Gt. Aunts who went out to Singapore and Penang. I would love to find any OFFICIAL records about them. I am told that one, was captured at the fall of Singapore, 1942, offered a safe passage to Australia, but the ship was sunk by the Japanese Navy. She would have been about 80 yrs. at that time.
I did quite well with some cousins of their's, thanks to a very helpfull lady on here. This family went to train racehorses for the Kaiser. Two of the sons were imprisoned in Germany in the first world war, then released to look after the horses, and became very successful breaders with many German Derby Day winners. See The Ruhleben Story. I know some of them had children, and I would like to see if there are any of their descendants alive today. As Joy has said, I too like to put the ' meat on the bones ', so to speak.
In the 1841 census, there was a female in the household of my 3xGT Grandfather, who I was certain, was not a daughter. It has taken me nearly two years to prove my theory, but I was right. Not had as much luck with a male, also present, but here again, I just know he was not of this family, but possibly an apprentice to Gt. Grandad, as he was a Master Baker.
So, it is onward and upwards. There is always something to find an answer to.

i have got back to 1512 on my family and 1640 in my hubby's
so they are starting to be just names and dates

i love the extra information
one of mine got fine 4p for not marking his pig
and another 6p for not attending church
3 were murdered
one carried the flag for the king at the battle of agincourt
another brought the first turkey to England
and my family started fox's biscuits
and i had a famous cricketer in the family
and one built a church in Yorkshire where lots of my family are buried
i also found out my hubbys family married into mine 3 times since 1700

and i am possibly related to my best friends hubby
in the 1700s though we have yet to prove this

i love this sort of info

Joy, that's what I want to do as soon as I fix my tree.

Huia, is there no one who can help you to keep your interest alive? Are they based in the UK?

I havent done any real research (e.g. looking at films at the LDS) for over a year now as my OH cannot be left on his own any more and it would be difficult to take him with me. There are still some gaps I would like to fill. And there are some certs that I have been meaning to buy for some time.
