Amanda2003 Report 18 Oct 2014 22:41

I also buy the Royal Gala apples Persie :-)

Tec , I don't know " these things " either :-) OH is the chef of the house here . He has been going on about rice and also as an ingrediant in cakes I believe ?

SueMaid Report 18 Oct 2014 22:41

Our London family were highly amused at how excited we were seeing a robin :-D

Hello everyone :-)

I told you to rest Linda but did you listen? No :-|

We have Royal Galas - the only apple I buy apart from cooking apples.

I'm sorry the Duchess is still ill, Tec. Sleep is a good thing.

Hello Amanda :-)

What a dreadful situation at sea, Sylvia. I hope it all turns out well.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 18 Oct 2014 22:35

Linda I've also got flowers in the garden that should be finished.

Amanda do they use saffron in curries, or colouring rice?

I don't know about these things :-0

LindainHerriotCountry Report 18 Oct 2014 22:33

We can buy Royal Gala apples in our supermarkets Persie

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 18 Oct 2014 22:31

Persie, we have Gala apples here. We do have NZ apples so perhaps the Gala ones are the NZ ones. I must take a closer look

Amanda2003 Report 18 Oct 2014 22:31

Thank you Tec , ever since I have been following your directions I have had the best roses ever :-D

I bought a couple of packets of Saffron crocuses a few weeks ago , planted them into a trough in the greenhouse and one of them is flowering already :-0 I am going to harvest the stigmas and dy them for cooking ( well that's the plan anyway .....lol )

We still have lots of winter tidying to do in the garden, the flowers have kept going for much longer than normal

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 18 Oct 2014 22:26

Should have said water gets in the hole around the base of the bush, then freezes

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 18 Oct 2014 22:25

Amanda, if you reduce the roses by half now, it prevents them rocking in the winter gales, thus making a hole around their base which can freeze and damage the bush.
Then in late February, early March, prune them down to about nine inches, depending on the size of the bush.

You won't harm them

We had apples called gala and my friend from the USA really liked them. Some months later when she was back home she saw gala apples in her local shop and thought they were imports. No US had decided to name an apple that she did not like gala (it is there number 2 apple). US naming took precedence and NZ gala apples became royal gala.

I'm glad you've mentioned roses and pruneing Tec , is that the prescribed thing to do at this point in time ? OH bought a shredder and is right into putting everything he can into it at the moment ....lol I didn't think I ought to prune the roses to hard in case we get winter weather but they look as if they need to be reduced somewhat in height .

I read about the ship Sylvia, I hope the oil doesn't pollute the shore

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 18 Oct 2014 22:18

Very serious situation with the Russian ship Sylvia, hopefully the tugs will get to her before she drifts any closer to the coastline. Shame that the Captain is injured.

Hello Amanda,
It was very warm here too today, but rained heavily this afternoon.
I have a robin that seems to sing all day in the apple tree next door.

I took my rose trees down to half today, and will prune them again in February.
They were not pruned at all last Autumn or Spring, hence I ended up with roses six feet tall this summer.

Hello Linda , I have had a robin about in the past , not sure if it the same one that has returned but his song was most welcome :-) I hope my black cat doesn't scare him off :-|
