All things being equal I would choose the one with the good sense of humour, who didn't pick his/her nose and wasn't a complete pain in the wotsit!

Easy-peasy.

I'd employ the one that looked the most desperate.

I'd choose the good looking one - and as I'm an Aussie and good looking it would be me:))

I would say it depended on the job. A better command of language dosent make you superior, but if the job was customer facing and they had to deal with the public day in and day out, If the qualifications were all equal I would choose the one best suited to deal with the public with clear communication skills, regardless of colour or creed.

If the job was non customer (communicational) facing - I would try and find the best fit for the team they worked with, ie are they emotional, analytical, headstrong etc ... whatever the best fit for the team was on their non paper skills. Often it works to bounce people off each other who have different key strengths.

Lynda you are right. It really shouldn't matter,

If the job description asks for English. maths and science. then the selection shoud be on that

a friend of ours recently left his job, he is a english born pakistani fluent in Spanish ( the country we live in ). A qualified barman, waiter and all that. Been in the trade for over 8yrs.

Did english take him on

I agree it all depends on the job and common sense a lot of the time regardless of race, creed, colour or gender.

On the other side of the coin.... a fellow pub landlady when employing barmen always gave the job to the applicant who had the nicest bum, as long as he could understand "2 snakebites, two chinese & 4 scratchings"..... or pretended he could!

libby behave I have own up that I loved Oz barstaff the best ( almost) I ever had.

I forget to say Craig new Oz lang also ( he could say g'day) Yes the spanish snapped him up, because he could speak english, but he didn't have to have Spanish. Just know a bar.

what a waste of a language mind !

edit to say it comes in handy on deliveries being able to speak Spanish

How could I feel superior to someone who doesn't speak my language?

It means that they can speak more than one language and since I can only speak one - they must be superior to me - in languages, that is!

They would have to be lacking in other things for me to feel superior to them - things like honesty, respectability, etc.

Ahh Berona you are you are a minority who would not worry if they spoke a 2nd language but are right about not feeling that you are better than they are.

Actually I envy a person who speaks more than 1 language. I was listening to an interview on the telly the other day and a woman said she can speak 6 languages - 3 of them fluently. What a skill.

I would think that it depends on the job.

I recently called a helpline, and after the girl at the other end had tried to give me instructions three times, I had to apologise and tell her that I couldn,t understand a single word,

I felt really sorry for her, but if she couldn,t speak English clearly, should never been chosen for that job.
